This. That's actually the additional value to buy it digital for WiiU, that the Gamepad is supported.

The digital Wii games aren't emulated and also go into Wii mode, so that doesn't hold.

When you press home on the Gamepad, does it say something like the Wii U Gamepad is not compatible with Wii titles?

I know. Still they patched in Gamepad-support for these, so it is an additional value. You can use all buttons, including Home-Button. Home-Button shows the Wii-dialog for going back to Wii-menu and you can control the pointer with the sticks to choose OK or Cancel. But it goes back to WiiU-menu if you click OK.

Also the digital games are counted in the usage-app (how many hours you played which title), while Wii-mode isn't.
