With N64 nintendo stuck with the cartridge format while everyone else was disc based, that put limitations on the software. Nintendo didn't think discs were kid friendly. Losing Final Fantasy 7 to sony was a huge blow and it feels like they never recovered the market they lost from that. The gamecube looks like a purple lunch box and has a silly name. The PS2 and Xbox OTOH were considered sexier/macho/for people that liked mature titles. |
Cartridge vs. Optical Disc have nothing to do with kids. nintendo thought they could control Cartridges better. That's it. Color of the Gamecube might really be a hint towards kids, but the games on the lunchbox were targeted mostly at adults. A problem of mixed signals. And naming - I don't know. PS is short for Playstation, that does sound as silly as Gamecube. XBOX is just a bland name.
