I like how the OP takes a shot at other games right at the beginning, then talks about haters as though he has some kind of moral high-ground. People thinking their favorite genre is somehow inherently better than other genres has to be one of the most brainless aspects of video-game fandom.

Anyway, I guess we're going to see dueling "X is GotY at Y!" threads now. Awesome.

I don't think that was his intent. He was speaking of the tendency of critics to gravitate towards first and third person shooters (and recently WRPGs) as almost categorical GOTY contenders in lieu of anything else. Much the same would likely be said if they had chosen, say, Puppeteer.

Is that really even true, though?  Didn't the Mario Galaxy games win multiple GotY awards?  And last year Journey and The Walking Dead?

Games like The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite, and GTA VI deserve consideration because they're high quality games, they aren't there just because they're realistic or have blood.  Implying that was just an effort to disparage them, which is petty.

Mario World might be the best of the lot, I have no idea, but there is no reason to suggest that the other contenders don't deserve their own accolades.

Well I know a lot of people started getting annoyed that call of duty modern warfare 2 was getting GOTY hence the hate of FPS, but you are right about last year, The Walking Dead namely stole a lot of game of the year awards.

As for Mario Galaxy, despite being the highest rated game of that generation, it didn't win that much that year, infact it was really discounted in a lot of those GOTY talks, sometimes it wasn't even nominated. Might be why Nintendo fans are bitter towards the press. Imagine if Uncharted 2 was left out of GOTY.
