That would require people to purchase an AppleTV first though. I just talking about a generic lead which allows iDevices to be connected to any TV screen

With Apple, there is nothing generic and it would cost $100 -- or more.

And something like this would probably only work for an iPad --- which is 2x the cost of a console now. 

If this feature was implemented then it could only have a positive effect on iPad sales. (they sell 14 million iPads every 3 months, and a bonus feature such as console gaming capabilities would only increase this)
