So it's clear that ticket sales have been decreasing somewhat over time.

But it would be inaccurate to attribute this all to piracy. For one thing, cinema tickets are far more expensive than they used to be. DVDs, streaming services and cable TV have provided a more reasonable and in many ways more comfortable movie-watching experience. With personal computers in our homes and internet connections, not to mention video games, and all of the other things invented in the last 30-odd years, we have far more entertainment available now than people did a few decades ago.

Piracy certainly has an effect, but I doubt it's a big one.
