As George R.R. Martin is involved in making the show I think they will not depart from the ideas behind the books. Sometimes they may seek another view of the events though.

Terry Goodkind was involved in Seeker.

 

George Lucas was involved in The phantom Menace.

 

I hope you are right though.

Waaghh. Don't destroy my hopes. But as far as the first episodes are going, GoT stays pretty close to the books. Some changes are in it, but TV is a different medium, without some changes the result would probably suck.
