There's no real incentive.  Pokemon sells 15m+ on handhelds as is, and the appeal is still fundamentally tied to local play and trading (even if DS added online).   I just don't think Nintendo (or Game Freak/Creatures) sees any real reason to change that formula.

Trading and battling could be done with friend codes online, and it's not like the Wii can't handle traditional Pokémon gameplay.

No, I meant change the platform formula (handheld main games).  I think best you can hope for are the Arena-link-up games adding back in a story/RPG mode (like Coliseum/XD).

is it possible to make a 2-d console pokemon game with same mechanics as the handheld ones but with more functions and barely little load times? If yes then that would be awsome!
