It's not just about graphics, it's also about the popularity that the media created.

I have some questions for you:
-When did you started playing FF games?
-Did you played FFVI?
-Do you think that Sephiroth is a better villain than Kefka? Why?
-Do you think that Cloud is a better protagonist than Terra? Why?
-Do you think the storyline in VII is better? Why?
-Do you think FFVII has more twists than FFVI? Give me some examples.
-What is your favorite character in FFVII and why?

I am just a bit curious, this is not a discussion yet.

I'll keep my answers short (edit: looks like I failed at that ), because we'll go into incredibly tl;dr territory otherwise. This will come at the expense of detail, but meh

1. (I'm sure this will be used against me) yes, my first FF game was 7, back in 1998. Unfortunately, it was the first RPG to get a siginificant release where I lived.

2. What? Of course I've played it. I borrowed it from a friend when it was ported to the PSX and bought my own copy later.

3. It's hard to say. I think that Sephiroth's motives for becoming evil were much better than Kefka's since being driven insane by a terrible discovery seems much more "satisfying", in some way, than going insane because of something that physically changes his brain. He also has reasons for wanting to kill humanity; at first, he wants revenge because he wrongly believes that humans killed his ancestors, and later because he believes that harvesting their energy will help him to ahcieve his destiny to become a god (although it's debatable as to whether Sephiroth is really in control at this point). He isn't just crazy and evil for crazy and evil's sake, and this makes him seem like a much more well-rounded and three dimensional villain than Kefka. His evil is also much more directed. A lot of his detractors point out that he has a low kill count by the standards of FF villains, but when he does kill people, he makes it matter; people are still bawwwing about one flower girl 12 years after the game came out (there's a very good reason as to why her death is so significant compared to the million killed by other villains, but there isn't time to go into that now). The way I see it, Sephiroth is like a sniper rifle, whereas Kefka is like a rocket launcher.

However, we hardly ever get to see Sephiroth, which is a big disappointment, and Kefka has a lot more "personality" than Sephiroth. Still, I think that Sephiroth just about wins for me.

4. TBH, I didn't really care about either of the protagonsists

5. This has the potential to cause a lot of arguing . I think that FF7's storytelling is a lot more "disciplined". There are side stories and tangents, but there's a very definite main path that the game takes. FF6 may have a more complex storyline, but I think that the various subplots and such are quite hastily put together and there isn't enough focus on the central plot.

6. Dunno. I'd say that the main character not being who he thinks he is is quite a twist, however. So is finding out halfway through the game that you've been helping the bad guy.

7. Once again, I can't really decide. Actually, I think that the what makes a lot of people like FF7 is the amount of work put into the minor character and the fact that there aren't really any characters that completely oivershadow the others. It makes the world seem a lot more "rounded". Sephiroth, for example, is apparently the bad guy, but there's also Jenova, Hojo, the Shinra corporation, and so on. All four could be said to be the true villain in FF7.

Interestingly, when FF7 forums do a poll on who people's favourite character is, it's rare for one to get more than 25% of the vote, and even peope like Rufus and Reno always get quite a few votes.

I'm sure that this overly long response will make me look like a fanboy and incite some people to rage, but that's life.

3. I think that the flower girl was very charismatic, Square killed an important character (for the players) just to make players feel how serious the game is. Your comparison about Sephiroth being a sniper rifle and Kefka a Rocket Launcher isn't incorrect in my opinion. I agree with you but Kefka has a lot more personality than Sephiroth (like you said), Kefka gave me a lot of trouble during my journey and he even made me hate him! That's why I think he is better, he is always there and when you think that he is not there... *BOOOOOM*.

4. I can't really explain it, but here is where you showed me that you doesn't have a biased opinion. Most of the people say that Cloud is awesome because he is awesome and they doesn't have an explanation for it because Cloud isn't really that perfect as a protagonist.
5. I really prefer the complexity and variety of FF6 here. You will have more things to put in your mind, more stories, more feelings etc.
You doesn't seems to be a fanboy, you actually gave me some good arguments.

Everyone accepts VII was the best, but people are tired of hearing about it, and it's  now considered cool to pick something else. So we see VI appearing as number one.

I think you might be missing part of he equation here. dont you think its possible that…..... maybe…...... perhaps.......  in some strange realm of existence........ there could be a legitimate reason to dislike FFVII? did you ever chance upon the possibility that maybe FFVII didn’t get the top spot because it simply wasn’t the best and didn’t deserve it? For a FFVII fan to accuse an outside group of being fad-driven, overzealous or pretentious, it is just ironic as hell.

Versus XIII will soon be number 1! Muhahahaha!

I wish :[

No, it won't, hint: FFX-2 is not on the list.

I think is impossible for someone to be 100% agreed with that list. Personally I think that FFVIII and FFV are way too high and FFIX should be at least in the top 3.

People will never stop fighting over FFIV, VII, IX.  Remember the first rule of fanboyism.  Everything was better when you were 10 years old.

The series is only going to lose its appeal with the majority of Final Fantasy fans from here on out.

Also, I'd like to point out something.  The reviewers on IGN CONSTANTLY use the FF series as a measuring stick of quality to other RPG series (Dragon Quest, Tales, Fire Emblem even).  I've heard some ofthem claim their favorite is FFIV, other FFVII and one even say FFVIII.  But I've never heard any of them say FFVI was their favorite.

Think of that for a second.

Booyah! Great to see 6 at the top where it belongs.

But there's one error. It said FFX is the only one to get its own sequel. Did they really forget about FFIV: The After Years? It just came out in America.

You can't spell IGNorance without IGN...  Yeah, that never gets old.

Techncially, FFIV, VII, X and FFXII all have sequels.  Depending on how far you want to take the term 'sequel'.  Also, all those games came out in the last 4 years.  Or if you're just couting the movie for FFVII (Advent Children) it would be movie.

Who cares what IGN thinks?

All that matters is that they rated FFVI as number 1.

Indeed :)  No seriously, I've only played like 6 out of the 20+ FF games.  However, out of those games, FF 6 is my favorite.

Actually, with FFXIII, there's only around 15-16 'Main' Final Fantasy games (depending on your definition).

But just counting games that have the title 'Final Fantasy', there's well over 65+ now.
