Forums - Sony Discussion - Bluray = better graphics?

yes. just check out uncharted 2 or killzone 2 or mgs4

but it also depends on budget and expertise, a good dev with a good budget will get more out of a bluray disc than a dvd.

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I am amazed that this post produced this thread.  Well done.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Now, I know Uncharted 2 had hours of dialog and FMV in game and extras, in HD.  For the life of me, I STILL don't know what the hell was going on with MGS4's programming.  It used 4 gig installs, load screens, and the game was pretty short.  The FMV's used the in game engine instead of pre-recorded video like Uncharted 2.  Great game but, what the hell, Konami?

It had a LOT of sound stored on disc and that sound was in 7.1 lossless format. Mainly it was the sound and you know like 5% or fewer people have the sound system to be able to tell the difference and of those half or fewer have the ears.

Uhm... 7.1 sounds for 3D-videogame? Sounds pretty stupid for me. Unless theres lot of movies or movie like scenes, but I think even then it would be better to use mono.

also bluray is good cause it can store many languages :)
like here in europe basically every-game has english french german and spanish on it that's pretty neat :P (compared to xbox who has only one language that's one reason I choosed ps3 )

Xbox 360 version response: Sound is always compressed I think you're referring to lossless compression. Also I don't feel like providing a link, go search it up yourself if you're interested.

Digital sound is not always compressed. There are limitations to digital sound recording, of course, but it's not compression.

OP: No. It offers benefits for manufacturing and distribution, and for customers who don't have to disc swap, but nothing else.

Interesting stuff, but of course they wouldn't use it as according to the article the bit rate is too high.

I guess a correction is in order, sound is generally compressed in most practical applications!

Tease.

CDs have PCM sound. Lots of DVDs do as well, but yeah, it wouldn't be used in a game. After all, an hour of PCM 5.1 sourround would take up 6 CDs...

EDIT: Ingame sound effects are almost certainly PCM though.

Basically more storage is what Blu Ray brings to the party

Graphics are a combination of texture quality, rendering resolution and SFX

The Blu Ray can help with the first the GPU with the latter two.

haha, if you said to me that the pictures of the burgers at the fast food joints were truly representative of the food you get at the drive through window you'd pretty much get the same answer that everyone knows that they are bullshots and the same applies to games. The pictures I see on the forums vs the pictures I see on my 53" Bravia are completely different.

On many games yes, on Uncharted 2, not at all.

Not on Uncharted 2? Somehow Uncharted 2 is different? People struggle to name developers who DONT release bullshots and not the other way around.

Yep. Sorry, keep reaching.
