Digital sound is not always compressed. There are limitations to digital sound recording, of course, but it's not compression.

OP: No. It offers benefits for manufacturing and distribution, and for customers who don't have to disc swap, but nothing else.

Interesting stuff, but of course they wouldn't use it as according to the article the bit rate is too high. 
I guess a correction is in order, sound is generally compressed in most practical applications!
