It's a very high amount for a company of Nintendo's size. They have a few thousand employees, and few other expenses other than staff (few factories etc.). Nintendo could live on $10 billion for many years (maybe more than a decade) even if the videogames market completely crashed, without doing any layoffs. That's how high $10 billion is.
For comparison, Sony has less cash on hand, and much higher expenses than Nintendo with their 180,500 employees.

I'd like to see Nintendo invest a little of that. I mean, they are doing already with that new R&D building and they did buy Monolith Soft, but why not go a little further? With their business expanding, and the demand from core gamers for core games and the new casual audience, it would make sense to expand their internal studios.
Expand EAD in Tokyo, or something. Obviously it would take time for the studio to establish itself, but I really think that'd be a worthwhile investment.
C'mon Nintendo, buy Platinum games and the Viewtiful Joe IP from Capgod. Come on, come on!
And so why doesn't Nintendo buy more studios?
I don't see why they don't use the money to buy some studios they could start putting out as many games as Sony.

To be fair, they opened Sora and R & D 5 recently.
