Forums - Sales Discussion - A possible reason 3rd parties ignore the Wii...

Seems to be debate on which console does the best job moving 3rd party software. Just based on the top 10 selling games I wanted to show the disparity. Also you may notice the Wii games are lackluster in comparison to the HD games. At least in my opinion of course, perhaps some of you genuinely enjoy those games.

Bear in mind which console has the largest userbase.

Well it is obvious that FPS are going to sell better on PS360 than Wii (look at WaW), and so if a studio is used to developing on those platforms, and has an engine in place, then it is obvious to make a game like that

Then again, the 3rd parties could simply shift resources into Wii friendly games, but when things like Carnival games are selling many copies without that much resources put into them, I see no reason not to continue the way they are, but shifting slightly more to Wii as the recession hits the sales of PS360 more than Wii

Of course, let's ignore the quality of the products.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Third parties and Nintendo, sadly, have had an unstable relationship since Sony got into the gaming scene. They completely turned third party against Nintendo. In retaliation, Nintendo ignored 3rd party during the Gamecube era only to acquire them at the very end.

Its not that third party developers ignoring the Wii, its the developers that we care about, making the games that we care about that are ignoring the Wii. So no developers in general aren't ignoring the Wii, but the ones which count are.

Well then you have to drop the bottom 1 which sold 1.5m, putting it below the PS3.

Anyway, with double the user base, the Wii should be selling far more

Well 3rd party developers tend to put the same game on multiple consoles. I imagine putting the same game on the PS3, 360, an PC isn't too difficult given that they share similar hardware. Wii on the other hand needs games designed specifically or altered for it which is more costly and tends to sell less in the long run.

The Wii definitely has a market worthwhile for some developers. But I imagine we'll see less and less support down the road.

This is exactly the problem the wii has. 3rd party developers see good profits on a really low investment. So they continue do the same. They have no incentive to do better or invest more in a game, because of decent competition or broad demand for quality. It acts out like a self-fulfilling prophecy. Because the whole 'stupid kiddy console' idea took hold, they see very little reason to put more effort in the wii games.

This year sees a far better line-up of quality. But it is still not what a marketleader should have. It seems the mindset is truly changing, but it painfully shows that most 3rd party developers have little imagination or courage to do something new. When i first saw the wii, i thought of the new gaming opportunities coming our way. I saw it, Nintendo sure saw it, but not many others. It's sad that an old veteran like Nintendo got so much disbelief. Nintendo basically started the business with the same daring attitude. And for the most time they kept it, despite some stupid mistakes (you know them). If i worked in the industry, ik knew this: Don't take your eyes of Nintendo, ever.
