Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN: Is Metal Gear Solid Overrated?

There are some "..... what the heck....." moment in MGS4, but it was a pretty good game.

I'd have to say that MGS1 and 3 are the best.

^100% True.
Although MGS is still fun. In certain ways. Boss fights are always "teh epicness"

Certainly MGS is fun. But it was the first game to prove that a game doesn't necessarily have to be such, it can rely on the strength of it's narrative, it's message to sell well as well. Braid took this and ran with it, and The Path which many reviewers have been calling non-fun yet slapping good scores upon it is really capitalizing upon that idea now.

Fun is a very important factor.

No offense and I know what you're trying to say. But In order for you to appreciate games, movies or etc. you should have fun first. In order for you to get deep into a game, To understand the story more, unlock what everything in the game you should have fun first. Because you won't do it if you are not having fun. You will just get bored. If the game is boring for you. No matter how great it is, you won't appreciate it. Game should be fun and enjoyable first.

Fun is the most important element on a game.

That's why we are playing video games in order for us to have fun.

EDIT: Sorry for the poor english, if there's a wrong grammar. Correct me please I would appreciate it.

While you make a point, I disagree to an extent. I play games for meaning, for mind expanding experiences not just to have fun. That said having fun creates an even better experience, but it isn't the focal point of my gaming habits.

So what does having fun mean to you?

My answer is, having fun is when you enjoy what you are doing. It can be work, playing video games or etc.

I also read it someone's blog that fun is subjective. The fun-factor of something depends on the person using it.

Her answer to the question:

My guess is, to have fun means–to do something that will stretch our frowns to smiles and make us say, “I’m satisfied!”

Well, That's just my 2 cents.

Oh lord...
Anyhow, I personally disagree with the OP on this matter. MGS4 was in no way over-rated. I honestly don't know how the hell the story was told badly! I understood and very much enjoyed it. People seriously need to understand that the MGS series is VERY story-driven. Thus, the story will have an immense impact on your experience. Like I said before, I loved the story, no matter how far-fetched some of the scenes were. So, I'll answer again: MGS4 was not over-rated. By the way, this is my opinion. Don't confuse it with fact.

It's MGS1 not MGS4. You should read more and I don't agree with it either.

Click the link and read the article it's very interesting.

Oh, I'm sorry. Even so, my comment is directed to those who think that MGS4 was over-rated. As a whole, I absolutely love the MGS series. Just check out my sig.

Apology accepted. Just like you I also love the MGS series. MGS 4 is my first game on my PS3.

MGS1- no, loved the game, one of the best games of the PS/N64 era.

MGS2- yes, too similar to MGS1, hated Raiden and story was too convoluted

MGS3- No, great game, great story, and different stealth mechanic

MGS4- No, brought in all the aspects and mechanics of the previous games nicely. However, I think the story suffered somewhat from being Solid Snakes finale as there were a lot of 'WTF?!' moments. Also, more cutscenes then a mainstream Final Fantasy!

Metal Gear Solid is the best serie ever.

the games are episch and very exciting.

and: best story in a videogame

the best RPG's are coming 2013 !!!! oh my god, this is perfect for RPG-GAMER = ) Ni No Kuni - 25 january, Time and Eternity, tales of xillia (PS3) and the maybe best game ever: metal gear solid ground zero

Few franchises elicit passions in gamers quite like Hideo Kojima's epic Metal Gear Solid series. The trials of Snake and his fight against an ever-expanding cast of colorful villains started as a clever stealth game on the NES, but with the advent of the PlayStation, Kojima felt he had the tools to truly deliver on his vision for the series. Metal Gear Solid was cinematic in every sense of the word, from the opening credits to the finely directed cutscenes. Over the course of eight or so hours of play, gamers dug deep into a murky conspiracy involving a top-secret military program that had implications far beyond the Alaskan base that served as the main backdrop for Snake's adventure.

First off, the game started on the MSX, not the NES, IGN needs to get their facts straight. As for the series, its hit and miss. MGS1 is a classic. MGS2 was a complete disaster toward the end. MGS3 wasn't bad, and the story made sense. As for MGS4..............................doppelganger.

Lol.

MGS2's story is great, I don't get all this "disaster toward the end" crap.

MGS3>all

Haven't played MGSIV yet, but I find MGS3 to be very overrated especially on here since it was rated PS2's 2nd best game. There was so much bad dialogue to scout throughout most of the game, the ending was quite dramatic though. MGS 1 though, that was the best in the series IMO (I know, I know. I need to play 4 before I can say that)

Agreed with bolded statement. MGS3 is incredibly overrated. It was a large decline for the series coming off the pinacle of MGS2.

Yeah I agree , don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the series , but its crap story that has plot holes the size of states

If not for the fun from actually playing the game it would never have been on my radar

but teh same can be said for the halo series as well

MGS4 is, and to a slightly lesser extent MGS2 also.

Never come across so much inconsistant badly told story in my life as in those two games.

You're given to hyperbole and negativity.  If your last sentence is true, you don't get out much (don't encounter many stories, certainly not in video games).

Maybe MGS4 is a 92, not a 94?  Maybe.  Reasonable minds could think so.

Yeah and I can easily say that anyone who thinks those stories were even slightly good have never heard any other story in their life.

It isn't that MGS2/4 are only bad stories, or good stories only badly told.   They are bad stories and they are badly told.  It is a double fail.

Two negatives make a positive? lol j/k

I did, however, notice that someone said "notice how all the 360 and Wii fanboys hop in yada yada yada" and someone said "What? 360 fanboy = someone who doesn't like MGS? /fail"

But now after reading the thread, it IS in fact mostly the 360 fanboys hating on the game. For the most part. It doesn't matter, though, if the game is "overrated". I personally don't think it is because I enjoyed it. But from a pure perspective of gaming in general, if MGS is overrated, the Halo and Gears are super duper ultra turbo overrated (I still like those games though )
