Forums - Sales Discussion - Is Wii Number 1 for good?

1. You can't compair a handheld console to one that is stationary.

This is true.

2. A lot of people do think the Wii is a fad (of course, not on this site). Almost everyone that I know (in real life) that has one, is not a console/pc gamer. They're parents or 10 year olds.

This is personal so we dont know.

3. The only time I've ever enjoyed the Wii was while drunk. When sober, it bores me to tears. Why is that?

Again this is personal so we dont know.

4. Why would I want to play Wii golf in my living room when I can play real golf with my friends in the warm sun? Why would I want to play Wii bowling in my living room when I could play real bowling with my girlfriend at the bowling alley? etc, you get the idea...

I agree with this i would prefer to go out and play these things than stay in.How about you other people?

5. HDTVs are becoming cheaper and cheaper. As more get sold people will want to buy a console capable of HD gaming. Blu Ray and HDDVDs are selling more and more, people will want to watch HD movies which the Wii also can't do.

This is also true.

End of 2014 Hardware Predictions (03/03/14)

PlayStation 4: 12-15million

Xbox One: 7-10 million

Wii U: 8-9 million (Changed 01/04/2014 from 7-9 --> 8-9 million)

Maybe not in total sales or in software sales but in there are valid comparisons between handheld systems and home consoles. Much like comparing Television to Movies you can't necessarily make direct comparisions but the fundimentals are important in both formats.

Certainly, a lot of people do think the Wii is a fad; far less than those who don't think the Wii is a fad but that isn't important. The odd thing is I have the complete opposite situation as you do, most people I know who are gamers have either bought the Wii or are planning on buying the Wii in the near future. For the most part the reason personal experience isn't very important is that most people live in a bubble of similar people with similar worldviews which means that obviously the people around you will have similar preferences as you.

Probably because when you're drunk is the only time you can be free of your insecure self and enjoy the Wii for what it is ... Much like the guy who only sleeps with other guys when you get plastered, your conscience mind prevents you from seeing your subconscience desires while sober.

Why would you play madden when you can go outside and play football? Why play Gran Turismo/Project Gothem Racing when you can race real cars? Why play Call of Duty when you can just join the army?

BECAUSE VIDEOGAMES ARE MORE FUN AND REQUIRE LESS EFFORT

Can you show me statistics that demonstrate a noticeable correlation between HDTV ownership and a reduction in desire to own the Wii? Last statistics I saw indicated a large correlation between HDTV ownership and Wii ownership inspite of the Wii not outputting in HD resoultions.

People can have fun playing the Wii when sober? NO WAI!

Leave the insults out TheBigFatJ, but I agree with HappySqurriel.

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

@Topic:
The X360 will not outsell the Wii in my opinion in September,October,November,December.I dont see how the X360 could take 1st again this gen it would need launch type sales to do that.
On the topic of Wii staying No.1 well alot can happen in 5-6years i will be in Uni by then and that seems ages away so in that time PS3 could take the lead,the X360 could take the lead,the Wii might become a fad and start selling sub-GC numbers we just dont know.

No, his points were not good. My statement was clearly a facetious jab at the suggestion that the Wii is a fad. I wasn't trying to actually compare the DS to the 360. Look at the statement to which I responded.

He makes a bunch of ridiculous statements -- "I know a few people who think the Wii is a fad therefore..". Therefore nothing. You don't make statements about millions based on tens, especially based on a distribution like that. It is foolish and it doesn't deserve a response. Other parts of his logic were just erroneous: more HDTVs are being sold and those people will want HD consoles.

Nelson surveys showed that the MAJORITY of 360 owners don't even know it's HD capable. The numbers will be far worse for those who have not yet bought a 360. This suggests that HD is a secondary issue in the market right now. This is why BD and HD-DVDs haven't managed to capture even a tiny fraction of the market despite very aggressive marketing.

I will make my own list, just as good as his, also stating why the Wii is a fad:

(1) Grape jelly is a lot better than strawberry jelly. Every single one of my friends agrees, and two of them are even allergic to strawberry jelly.  As a joke, I gave one of them a PB&J sandwich with strawberry jelly and she almost died.  FACT: no one outside of senior citizens and babies like strawberry jelly, and most of them are dieing.

(2) I can only enjoy blankets while awake. When I'm sleeping, I hate blankets. Why is that?

(3) A lot of computers have been selling, so no one will want a 360 because those games are already available on the PC (lol)

(4) More and more people in the world are getting access to electricity and want to buy electric cars to take advantage of their new electricity.

Right now the Wii is the "it" thing among non gamers.  It's the hip thing for older adults to get so they can play someting other then scategories or win, lose, or draw when they get together with their drunk friends.

 Like already pointed out

1. is pretty much true, it should be compared to Psp, which was supposed to outsell Ds/l,

2. is personal point of view,

3. also personal point of view,

4. like already pointed out it's cheaper and more effortless, but you can still do both, right ?,

5. would also like to see how buying hdtv/hd-ready tv, automatically means you won't buy Wii/Ps2, i bought 32" Samsung Hd-Ready tv last X-mas and i already had Wii at that point and later bought Ps2, and i see no point buying Hd/Br-Dvd movies before players will become cheaper and/or it is decided which one wins format war, or when dual-format players are readily available.

And for the end ranting, why would you always need to be drunk to enjoy something ?

Nothing's cheaper than something free.

F1 vs FOTA, when too much power is in couple peoples hands.

I know a lot of people who post silly and stupid statements all around the web, so internet was made for silly and stupid people... if i tell you so, it's true!

Sarcasm off/ Oh, and by the way, i can't be a parent AND be a "real" console gamer? Give me a break! I'm 39, i've played on more consoles in my life than most of the so-called "hardcore" players, and today, my greatest fun is playin' DS and Wii with my kids...

And i consider PS3 and 360 as total rip-offs, not because i'm not a "real" console gamer, or because i'm a braindead fanboy, but because there are many, many reasons to think so! I prefer a good PC to a Red Ring of Death or a Blue Ray of Uselessness!

totally agree with you , many console people screaming HD gaming like something ultra cool and new.  They really dont know what they are talking about.  PC gamers been playing HD gaming for years already, just that not many have the luxury to play PC game on a monitor capable displaying over 1600x1200 resolution. ITs not that big of a deal. even on 1280x1024 I consider that HD when compared to console.(remember most of the videocard on the market able to display resolution over 1600x1200)

bottom line is; all these bullshit talk and hype about HD gaming is just a gimmick, console maker basically use these arguement to avoid a spec sheet of raw power what their system can do. I"m sure that video chipset underneath 360/ps3 capable display something very high in resolution, dont be suprise if that chip inside the wii able to display high resolution with a firmware upgrade.  Although it can but will it run at a playable frame rate is another story.

I have been playing with 1280x1024 for almost 10years

Jesus... did Microsoft or Sony literally rape some of your mothers?  You are some angry people.  Do you guys win some sort prize in the mail if Nintendo wins in sales?  Or is this some religion I'm not aware of?

1. This is true.  We are talking about the Wii (and 360, ps3), so even bringing up handhelds doesn't really contribute in any way.

2. This is also true.  It doesn't mean it's true for EVERYONE.  I means it's true for what I'VE seen... hence, it's formed my OPINION on what I think the Wii movement is.  Do you know what that means?  I'm not trying to pass it off as fact.  I'm stating my opinion.  I'm not on a crusade like some of you who won't be able to exist if your namebrand doesn't win.  If Sony dies, if Microsoft dies, if Nintendo dies tomorrow... it doens't effect my life in any way.  I liked my dreamcast and all, but when Sega died, I didn't shead a tear.  I laughed, and dumped it on ebay.

3. Again, this is true.  It's what I've experienced.  Just because you love waving around a wand, it doesn't mean everyone does.  I'm one of those that doesn't enjoy it.  There are 11 million who do.  That's great for them, but not everyone does.  At least right now, almost 11 million 360 owners and 4.5 million ps3 owners (give or take the few that overlap for multisystem owners) prefer to use a gamepad.  Not to mention the millions of PC gamers that prefer the mouse and keyboard.  So (as of right now) more gamers prefer to not wave a wand then do.  It's just a preference of the people... it doesn't mean your precious console sucks.

4.  Again.  This is true.  I would rather do it in real life... not swing a wand.  Again, my opinion, my preference.  If you want to wave in the air, awesome.  Go for it, but understand that not everyone "enjoys" that.

5. This is true.  HDTVs are selling more and more every year.  I never said that people will stop buy Wiis all together.  I just said that the sale of more and more HDTVs will prompt people to buy HD consoles and HD movies.  If it wouldn't, then BluRay and HDDVD players would be zero.  HD console sales would be zero.  People don't  buy HDTVs to not get the higher resolution?

Some of you like passing off your opinion as fact, then when someone else gives their opinion that doesn't reflect yours, all of a sudden you get very defensive.

The original poster asked a question.  I answer based on facts and what I've seen... which base my OPINION. Wasn't that be the point of asking a question?

@HappySqurriel
1. i just don't think handhelds should be discussed considering the Wii wouldn't be #1 if they are brought up.

2. those are good points.  but I was specifically talking about personal experience in real life (as I stated).  But you do make a good point about how people (or their groups) live in bubbles.

3. well, I'm not gay, and i'm not insecure.  I'm sorry that you can't accept that not everyone likes something just because you do.  Just like I accept the fact that just because I love the Godfather doesnt' mean you do too.  Nor does it mean that I have to call you a fag for not liking it.

4. I much rather play football IRL then on a videogame.  There is no car simulator on Nintendo platforms so I'm not sure why you brought up GT.  FPS are the only thing that peak my interest on the Wii.  I'm very curious as to how well the wand will work with a quality FPS game.  In fact, if a big time developer (e.g. Epic) can do it properly, it could replace the M/K as the standard.

5. I never said there would be some huge drop off in Wii sales because of HDTV sales.  I said there would be an increase in 360/PS3.  There's a difference.

@mitsuhide
At least there's one person who would like to discuss rather then insult.
