Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Thread

I haven't played a Fire Emblem game. it looks like an RPG/fantasy Advance Wars (made by the same people even) so I will definitely check it out. I've been looking for the gC version with no success these last few months.

Blasphemy picking FE over Smash Bros! I'm looking forward to the game as well though. Still, FE doesn't hold a candle to Golden Sun in my book, and Camelot is making an as yet unnamed Wii RPG which should turn out to be Golden Sun.

You just lost yourself a lot of respect.

Oh come on, FE is great, but it's got it's got a lot of balance issues. From an RPG fan standpoint, Golden Sun is a much more balanced and polished experience. It's not that I in anyway disliek FE, but I wish they would fix some of the major problems. Until they do, Golden Sun is better.

Golden Sun lacks interesting characters and their development is practically nonexistant. The combat system of GS is very basic and boring and the absolutely unnecessary text messages are annoying, why didn't they just use hitpoints on the screen? Graphics, sound and dungeon design are good, but the shortcomings in story and combat hurt the game. The first game had some original things, but the second didn't improve much on it.

Fire Emblem gives a huge number of different characters to choose from to form your own team, all with different strength and weaknesses. All characters have more background story than each of the GS characters. However, you learn most of the FE in the support conversations, so you can't learn everything about them in one playthrough. Each chapter in FE requires different strategies, you have to rearrange your team accordingly. The combat system in FE is of course much deeper than in GS because it's a strategy RPG. Mediocre graphics, but great soundtrack.

Gameplay > Graphics. FE > GS.

Well, not really good to compare the games anyway because one is a regular RPG and the other a strategy RPG. But don't say GS is more balanced and polished, it's not. If you disagree, then I will... I don't know, probably accept your opinion.

I would prefer not to bash Fire Emblem in it's own topic, so I'm just going to say I disagree. My score for FE:PR is about an 8.7. My score for Golden Sun is about a 9.0. Not a huge difference, but I still prefer Golden Sun. I would like FE to shake up the formula a bit. PoR was a little bit too true to the gameplay formula of the GBA games for my tastes. Again, I am in no way saying it's a bad game, I just think it had a few issues that bothered me.

Of course, we all have our opinions about things, and you're welcome to say what you like or dislike about it. Just be aware that you're more than likely to start a debate.

I've never played Golden Sun before, unfortunately. And yes, I do agree that Fire Emblem does have quite a few balancing issues, mainly with the classes.

AW and FE are very similar games at their core, chances are good that if you liked AW (which I know you did) you will like FE. Personally, I was addicted by AW before I played my first FE and after playing both series I prefer FE over AW.

Excellent! Now all I need to do is get a copy of Fire Emblem for Gamecube. Why is it that gamecube stuff is so difficult to find? Honestly Nintendo, get cracking!

I know POR sold 150k in Japan alone.

GoD did like 200k.

Well, okay then here are my main problems (again, not huge, but enough to bother me a bit):

1) Although the story was very good, the delivery was not. Text could go on for 5 minutes plus of straight reading without any break. The places where voice acting was used were delivered excellently, and I wish that the voice acting had been used more.

2) The characters were not all balanced. Ike, Jill, Kieran, Soren, Oscar, Reyson, and Boyd were significantly better than other characters. Mia, Ulki, Rofl, Janaff, Elincia, Bastian, Lucia, and Shinon (among others) are practically worthless. There are also tons of mid-range characters, but if you played through the game a couple times, by the 3rd you knew exactly who was worthwhile and who wasn't.

3) Although the gameplay is good, and I enjoyed it, I think it's to the point that they could make it a little deeper. I don't want them to throw out the formula or anything of the sort, but I would like them to expand on it and make it a little deeper. I don't know how much has been changed in Radiant Dawn though. I'll have to look into it.

4) My biggest Pet Peeve: Fights that are won or lost on nothing but luck. The Black Knight is one such fight. Basically, if Aether procs enough, you win. If not, you lose. That annoys the heck out of me, especially in a strategy game.

Anyway, it's good, just not perfect. I'll be certain to pick up Radiant Dawn when it comes out.

I don't agree on the characters. It's mostly the RNG that screws over your characters. Their growths only determine the chance of it happening. Besides, most of the PoR characters are decent enough anyways, and I found Hard mode in PoR to be easier than the normal in FE7.

Most are decent enough I agree. But they certainly aren't all equally useful. I never really bothered with Hard Mode. I thought the game was difficult enough without it. My favorite part of Fire Emblem btw: The Music. I still love the songs from FE.

Yes, the characters have never really been even... after Radiant Dawn, they should really try and go deeper with the skills, classes, and characters. Maybe their personalities or histories could give them a unique edge in battle instead of limiting it to a certain class. I have to agree with you on the music, though. PoR's orchestrated soundtrack was very well done, and I LOVED the remix of the Fire Emblem theme at the end.

If you find the game difficult and you have a lot of patience, try using BEXP and abuse the RNG. I've done it before and maxed nearly all of Mist's stats. And she has horrible growths and base stats.
