Yes, the characters have never really been even... after Radiant Dawn, they should really try and go deeper with the skills, classes, and characters. Maybe their personalities or histories could give them a unique edge in battle instead of limiting it to a certain class. I have to agree with you on the music, though. PoR's orchestrated soundtrack was very well done, and I LOVED the remix of the Fire Emblem theme at the end.
If you find the game difficult and you have a lot of patience, try using BEXP and abuse the RNG. I've done it before and maxed nearly all of Mist's stats. And she has horrible growths and base stats.
