Forums - Sales Discussion - Why the PS3 will dominate next gen

If Sony's PS3 really is as powerful as they say it is, and really can last 2 generations, it will dominate next gen. Its very simple. In 2010, about the time when the next xbox comes out, Sony's PS3 will have a 20 million userbase AT THE LEAST, likely much more. Before the new xbox is released, Sony's PS3 will have by far the best graphics. Once the new xbox comes out, PS3 will likely still be able to hold up (perhaps at wii vs 360 levels now)

Which console will people buy? People with a PS3 already will likely just keep the console they have, as he new xbox will likely cost around $400. The new xbox will probably have amazing online and graphics. However, the PS3 is likely to be $250-300 at that time, have great online (Home) and have a massive catalog of games from this gen that will smite xbox3's launch titles, will probably have a six axis with rumble, and will probably have a wii remote of their own with wii games. (to be fair, xbox 3 will probably introduce a wii remote too, but won't have many games yet)

What about Wii2? Nintendo's product will probably show up in 2011, and will probably be less than $300, and will probably have HD grpahics, decent online, and a 1:1 remote. It will likely also be backwards compatible, so people will be able to play their Wii games.

2 Weeks or so before the Wii comes out, Sony should make a "surprise" move and drop the price of the PS3 to $200. That would probably put them at a loss for the hardware, but would help gaurentee their dominace. Also, I don't think the Wii2 will sell well. The casual market likes the DS and the Wii because it is something new; stylus control and Motion control, and aimed at them. People will likely be bored of this "fad" in a few years, thus not many non gamers will buy the Wii's sequal. (btw, I love the wii, and think it is a good thing. I belive next gen, all competitores will have motion sensing controllers, and it will advance the market, as motion sensing is part of the future for video games, just as stylus control is part of the future for handhelds)

SO how will next gen play out? I have no idea how it will play out exactly, but I predict sony will secure its blu-ray format, sony will win the cosnole war, ninteno will hang in there nicley (and make a porfit, you can always count on nintendo handhelds :D ) and Xbox 3 will lose money yet again. I Think xbox 720 (or whatever it may be called) will be microsofts last console. They are the most liekly to lose the most moeny and perhaps have the last market share next time. Microsoft will see the writing on the wall. What will microsft do?

I think Microsoft should either

1. spin off their cosnole

2. Sell off xbox live to nintendo and become a 3rd party publisher

3. Sell out to sony (but only if sony is rich enoough to buy. also, If i am compeltly wrong and nintedo dominates next gen, microsoft could end up selling the xbox brand to nintendo)

What do you people think? Do you agree/disagree?

Disagree.

When Microsoft and Nintendo launch brand new consoles with brand new abilities, Sony will, too. The PS1 lasted ten years, yet the PS2 launched 5 years after the PS1. The PS2 will last ten years, yet the PS3 has launched 6 years after the PS2 launched. Same with the PS4. The PS3 could last ten years, but the PS4 will launch before then, mostly likely 5 to 6 years after the PS3 launched. And, at the Wii's pace, it is practically a deadlock that Nintendo will win this gen, with Microsoft and Sony scrambling for a distant second.

O.O
Is that really what Sony meant by the PS3 "lasting ten years"
I thought they meant it would be the console they support for 2 gens. If your right, Sony is in pretty big trouble...

They can't operate their business like Microsoft, simply because they don't have the cash or the market cap. If they spend all their remaining cash on a PS3 price cut, they are going to face an angry mob at the next shareholders meeting.

Processing power has very little to do with a console's lifespan ... With the exception of the Neo Geo, in every generation to date the consoles with the most processing power have had shorter lifespans than consoles with less processing power; the NES, SNES, Playstation and PS2 are the most recent examples of  less powerful consoles having much longer lives than most of their competition.

The PS3 is currently selling at a slower rate to the Gamecube so assume that it has a similar sales rate for the rest of this generation ... In 4 years the PS3 will have no third party support, sell so slowly that retailers want to drop support for it, and no consumers have interest in it anymore; how will it compete with cool new hardware when it has so much going against it?

I'm not even going to touch this outrageous comment with a 50 foot pole.

I agree nintendo will win this gen. (which I am glad about, since the only current gen systems I wonare a wii and a ds)

Welll... I am glad I'm wrong, becuase I don't like the playstation brand very much. I was just worried they had some sneaky plan.

So I guess sony's plan failed :D

Well, I do agree that Microsoft should just get out of the console gaming market at least as far as fielding a console goes. The PS3 sales are expected to heat up compared to MS by early ''08 with all of the upgrades , better games and whatnot, and MS will end up with a 3rd year of negative profits with its 360, not to mention the neg profits it had with the original XBOX. Microsoftcan't win with HD-DVD either. In short, I think that MS should stick with software, and get out while the going is good.

I think that the PS3 has a pretty easy 2nd place, but the question is whether or not it can beat the Wii?
