Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Are reviewers playing the same game I am? (The Last Remnant rant)

Why do people want the 100 point grade scale (or a scale at all)? all that will lead to is grade inflation, much like in the academic world. Is it the human need to classify everything? are we not grown up enough to draw our own conclusions based on a write up of another gamer. do we have such a lack of intellectual interest, that drives us to the connivance of some one else doing our judging for us to the point that we wont even take 3-5 minutes to read an article

my thoughts on this grading scale issue........

sorry but the "reviewers aren't scoring JRPG's right" argument is bull

Valkyria Chronicles got wonderful scores....Persona 4 has brilliant scores.....so far only Xbox 360 JRPGs havn't scored great cept for LO.

The JRPGs for 360 are not all the same quality.  The reviewers don't point out the good and bad. People who want to buy a JRPG for 360 don't know what to buy.

You make a good point.  Why can the review criteria be as simple as....

Buy it

Rent it

Avoid at all costs

Yeah I will get Tales of Vesperia for sure and SO4.

but I really don't enjoyed the others so far:

Infinite undiscovery:  Serious did they rushed this game?  The level of animation is weak weak like dynasty warriors weak...Story wise it is competing with the UWE bolls movies and the characters;..oh boy....Was I the only who was hoping that the main character would die when he was complaining that he is hungry? To conclude=> *Insert random quite of the Angry video game nerd with a lot of words like shit, bag of used tampons and a lot of diarhoa in it*.

Blue Dragon:.....Well that was surprising I loved the game the first hour....and I totally disagree with the X360 owners crow who said this game is bad.  The thing is the first hour of the game is probably the best of whole the game;..but that is also thx because I got blowed away because of the graphics and the AWESOME MUSIC:

Serious...I bet a lot of Blue Dragon gamers loved it!!....But after an hour of 6-10 I can't say how long I played it but it felt damned long...Story wise it didn't caught my attention and overall I had to force myself throug it until I totaly gave it up and joined the X360 crowd who hated it;

Lost Odyssey: Is just not my thing I can't say it is bad.  The game was to slow for me and I don't really love adult characters in JRPG's I prefer Chibi characters like FFVI or FFXI.  It just felt so strange,  Like the second time when you meet that African/latin woman did the devs tried to make her the cute character?  It just felt like giving Marcus phenix an Japanese schoolgirl uniform and asking him to act like an 16 year old cute anime character....WAARGh;..

Anyway I have the Persona 3 disease the game is refreshing and so good that it makes hard to love other JRPG's, you can compare it with all those people who have the COD 4 disease and can't play other FPS games anymore because COD 4 is damned good.

I agree that The Last Remnant is nowhere as bad as some of the reviewers say but personally for me, its below all the other JRPGs I have played so far on the 360. At least for IU, I preferred the action style combat and some of the characters were good. Maybe its because Im less a fan of the strategic battles and I cannot emphatise/'believe' the universe/characters that have been shown so far.

We'll see though, as I have only put in only a couple of hours into TLR and have finished IU, BD, LO. And yes, ToV/SOTLH cant come soon enough.

Reviewers actually do point out the good and the bad.  The problem is that the reviewers just seem to flake JRPGs just because they are similar to other JRPGs or because of technical issues yet FPSs can get away with being similar to each other and WRPGs can get away with technical issues.

I would say that premeditated reviewing is a poor way to provide objective input. Your first statement illustrates this plainly. Your lambasting reviewers for not being impartially fair, but you are also being unfair yourself. Reviews should come after you have played the game fully. How do you know otherwise. Graphical issues become more prevalent later in games as a rule, and the reason for this is obvious. While moving through the world the player accumulates active data that must also be managed. Over time the system must deal with greater stress.

Let me give you an example of this in Fable II a great many reviewers complained about the game suffering from slowdown. Through my first play through of the game it was hardly noticeable at all. I thought Jesus what ungrateful bastards these reviewers are. You lose a couple frames rarely, and its like its a crime against humanity. Then I uncovered their problem later on. Once you inventory over five hundred items in Fable II you begin to see the game have real hiccups. Which I doubt they understood, because their job was to play the ever loving shit out of the game. So of coarse they bought everything to test it out, and probably had ungodly inventory issues. For most players however it will not be a problem, and if you keep the inventory trim you should never have a issue.

I would say wait to give a green light on TLR. Wait until you have played through the game the tail end may be massively worse. All it takes is more data management really to begin taxing the system. I would also say you need to play through Infinite Undiscovery before you develop an opinion about the game. Far too many people I know who have played it did exactly what you did. They played for six hours, and set it aside. The game is slow in coming, and you have yet to touch even half of the systems.

@ dodece, there was a lot of slowdown in Fable II, not just when you had a massive inventory, which was useless to manage btw

Anyway, good to see that the graphical glitches weren't that bad. I am actually pretty interested in this game, but I would say I am not that great a fan of SRPGs, but I did love LO.

I will probably wait until next year because I have so many games to play at the moment and I could get it on PS3
