I cannot deny the success of Microsoft and the Xbox360, they have truly faught on through and established themselves as the HD console of choice.

Console of choice?

VGChartz data for sales for 2008 to date: Wii 19.8 million, PS3 8.7 million, X360 8.4 million, PS2 6.5 million. Which puts Nintendo at 46% of the console market, Sony at 35% and Microsoft at 19%. Back in 2005, Microsoft had 30% market share.

....Are you being ironic or no?

Good post. It's good to see a Sony fan in touch with reality. I was starting to think they did not exsist.

I will admit defeat to some extent because I did push the idea that Sony would overtake MS's XBOX 360 with the PS3 sooner rather than later (it might not happen at all).

But there were alot of unforseens which adversely anyone who predicted in favour of the PS3 when comparing it to the 360's sales performance , the recession , MS's extremely aggressive price cutting and so on.

@The_God_of_War

The difference between Sony and Nintendo is the same as the difference between night and day. Nintendo is financially conservative they generate profit on everything. Sony is a loss leader they start out unprofitable, and through volume accomplish price parity, and then profitability. The disparity in first party studios is also striking its a money making machine for Nintendo. For Sony at best they break even. For every God of War you can and will find an Untold Legends. Finally Nintendo for the past couple generations had one massive bright spots its called the hand held market. In which they also start out from a profitable position.

Nintendo can afford to skate as you colorfully put it. They made money on GameCube and 64 hardware. They would probably average around twenty million units of software every year. Then they had the hand held machines pouring cash into the equation for them.

Sony cannot afford to skate like you think they can. Not with their current strategy which means they have to fuel a fire with billions in loss. Not with dozens of game studios most of which do not perform well. Not with both Microsoft and Nintendo both having their cash reserves basically making the console war prohibitively expensive. I am not entirely sure they can even survive their current strategy. Let alone come back in the next generation with strong name brand recognition.

No if Sony is to survive they need to first find profit. With no profit this generation the stock holders are not going to give them another generation to burn five or six billion dollars. One or two billion maybe, but given five or six Sony cannot afford those kinds of losses period. Were they to know this generations cost today you would have never seen the PS3. Second they are going to look at Nintendo as the torch bearer as to how to do things. So it may say PS4, but don't expect it to be any stronger then a PS3. They will want a cheap console that makes them money right out of the box.

Microsoft have played an astounding game, have out performed Sony at every turn, even breaking into Japan, and for that i give credit.

And Nintendo, well, what more can be said? back where they belong, showing the world that games really are for everyone.

Good post. I especially agree with these two statements, especially the latter. My parents, for example, havent been into videogames since the NES. They are not necessarily my cup of tea anymore, but there is no denying that they, almost solely, once again expanded the gaming market like no other company can.

I think Sony's fall has been a result of several things: their terrible approach to this generation; Microsoft's aggressiveness; and Nintendo's gamble as well as its insight.

However, like you, I still prefer my PS3 to other consoles. But, this is my least favourite generation so far anyhow, so take that for what it's worth (I know we're only part way, but I'm not liking what I'm seeing).

Eat humble pie? Admit defeat? Lol.

What defeat? Sales of a corporation don't effect me. If we're talking quality of games then I'd consider myself a winner because I'm enjoying the PS3's games A LOT.

This will only take a moment of your time. *steals your watch*

I think that with the economy the way it is Sony is going to be in serious trouble next year with the PS3. I also think it will be the year when even the most die hard Sony fanboys will admit defeat.  Probably around October 2009 (early 2010 in Crazzyman's case).

i think Sony have done the right thing by not raising the price of the PS3 with the rest of their electronics range, but i think you're right considering the financial crisis. Having the highest priced console as everyone's purses get tighter will push it further and further out of the price range of the average shopper. Even if they manage to bring in a price cut, it will stretch Sony even further if they've not improved the loss per console sold. And it will still be the most expensive console on the market.

Price means much more than Sony first made out (with the reference to the "people will get a second job..." remark).

I just sold my 360 to my neighbor kid. didn't play it enough. Then it hit me. the system(360) is selling well with high school kids and younger.... I noticed that anyone I knew who bought a ps3 was 21 or older... also all the ps3 owners were just like me, they all owned a  360. it was like 360 was our stepping stone into the HD world... only time will tell....
