@The_God_of_War

The difference between Sony and Nintendo is the same as the difference between night and day. Nintendo is financially conservative they generate profit on everything. Sony is a loss leader they start out unprofitable, and through volume accomplish price parity, and then profitability. The disparity in first party studios is also striking its a money making machine for Nintendo. For Sony at best they break even. For every God of War you can and will find an Untold Legends. Finally Nintendo for the past couple generations had one massive bright spots its called the hand held market. In which they also start out from a profitable position.

Nintendo can afford to skate as you colorfully put it. They made money on GameCube and 64 hardware. They would probably average around twenty million units of software every year. Then they had the hand held machines pouring cash into the equation for them.

Sony cannot afford to skate like you think they can. Not with their current strategy which means they have to fuel a fire with billions in loss. Not with dozens of game studios most of which do not perform well. Not with both Microsoft and Nintendo both having their cash reserves basically making the console war prohibitively expensive. I am not entirely sure they can even survive their current strategy. Let alone come back in the next generation with strong name brand recognition.

No if Sony is to survive they need to first find profit. With no profit this generation the stock holders are not going to give them another generation to burn five or six billion dollars. One or two billion maybe, but given five or six Sony cannot afford those kinds of losses period. Were they to know this generations cost today you would have never seen the PS3. Second they are going to look at Nintendo as the torch bearer as to how to do things. So it may say PS4, but don't expect it to be any stronger then a PS3. They will want a cheap console that makes them money right out of the box.
