Ok, so I just got back to Japan (from my trip home to California for ~3 weeks) and I went to go pick up my pre-ordered copy of Tales of Vesperia (couldn't pick it up earlier as I was out of Japan!) and imagine my surprise when I saw these signs: (pics below taken w/my cell phone)

Xbox 360 Elite/20gb/Arcade all sold out at one the biggest stores in my city (2 million ppl here)

So I went to the other huge retailer here and same thing, usually they have little cards that you take to the register, but they were all gone!

The ToV hardware bundle is definitely not available either, I saw this huge sign posted (SOLD OUT!):

I also checked out another slightly smaller retailer near my apartment and it was the same, no 360's available! :D

not surprising seeing as how few 360's are usually sold in Japan that they'd be sold out...I don't think MS anticipated just how popular this game would get!

Let's remember that a "Sellout" is definitely relative to sales. 20k units being a "Sellout" is nothing special. But nice nonetheless.

it means that retailers had underestimated it, i'm sure microsoft is very willing to provide the 360s if retailers want to buy them.

I'm not sure if this has to do with excess demand or underwhelming demand , looking at the 360 install base in japan i'm guessing it's the latter.

Well, given the usually poor demand for the 360, this isn't surprising. I don't think any of us expected ToV to be quite this popular. Lost Oddysey sold decently in Japan but it didn't really push units. This kind of proves that like us the Japanese are more likely to go out and buy a known IP over a new one.
