Forums - Gaming Discussion - Have you ever begged your parents to buy you a game and felt bad about it?

I remember going to the mall with my parents. I dragged my mom into KB Toy Store and took her to the counter. I showed her a game that I wanted, it was Phantasy Star II for Genesis. I begged and pouted until she gave in. She asked the guy at the counter to pull out the game. He said it was $89.99. She looked at me and said, "Do you really want this?". When she said that, she really wanted to say, "I don't think we should get this, it costs too much." Then I said, "Yes." She couldn't say no to me for some reason at that point. I felt bad, but she went ahead and bought it.

Me and my mom walked out of the store and my mom looked ashamed to talk to my dad. My dad asked her what we bought and my mom looked like she was scared to tell him. So she told him and they talked about it for a while. Then my dad said, "it's ok, we'll just have to watch the budget this week." I felt so bad. -_-

I know that I shouldn't have said yes to buying that game, but I wanted it so bad.

$89.99 back then is like almost double what it is now, almost $160

I don't feel so bad these days. My mom has my old NES hooked up in her room and plays Super Mario Brothers almost every night for hours on end. The longest I've seen her play was 6 hours straight. She's never beaten it though. I also hooked up my Wii in her room. She loves the bowling and is REALLY good at it.

is that US dollars?? 89.99 in the early 90's?? That's how much Genesis games cost??

You should reimburse her if you really felt bad...

I always look for a woman who has a tattoo. I see a woman with a tattoo, and I’m thinking, okay, here’s a gal who’s capable of making a decision she’ll regret in the future.

Whoa $90????

I don't recall my parents buying me games they always though they were bad for me instead I asked them for money so I could buy them myself. But 90 bucks is a lot for a game...

Most sad :( I did trade some games and felt that way, though.

I shelled out $70 for Donkey Kong 64...they don't look like much now but back then cutting edge games cost plenty.

Especially at KB Toys...everything was like $10 more there, but there wasn't a Funcoland on every corner like Gamestops now.

But on topic, no, not really.  I remember asking for a few games, but they never really bought me games.  They gave me an Atari in preschool, and a Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 for Christmas when I was 8.  All the games for my Genesis and future systems I bought myself though, other than a couple gifts from my grandparents.

Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

you should have told her to take it back if you felt so bad....

I remember getting DK64 too, i think it was 60 or 70, are you sure it was 70?

But that's justified, because it had an expansion pack in the box with it.  When games are packaged with hardware, it's expected that they will cost more than normal (WiiFit.)  Can you think of any other examples?

I can't believe Phantasy Star II cost 90 dollars!

TC, how was your experience with Phantasy Star II back then.  Was it worth it?  Did you beat it?
