You always have a choice. You can choose not to use those programs or use equivelant programs that run on linux. What applications you were talking about? I might be able to help you with your problem.

Just buy all necessary components and you are not beeing forced to buy Windows. (50% of your applications...please be honest) and acknowledge it is a success. If this is done in a fair competitive environment I have no problem with that. But this isn't a fair and competitive environment, this is a monopoly. And normally we have laws that forbid these kind of things. Microsoft was so close before being broken up by the government but they wriggled out of it. This should give you some food for thought. Microsoft was and is still the best and that's why they are the number one. That's normal business. The better company wins

Ignorance.  Did you forget how Sony got into the video game industry?  They muscled their way in by throwing money around and taking franchises away from competitors, such as Final Fantasy from Nintendo.

I could use OpenOffice and live with the conversion problems. I could live with the crappy Flash support in Linux when developing Flex. I could try using VNC instead of RemoteDesktop when working on other Windows PCs (which are used by everyone else in the world). Yeah I could also stop using computers and live under a bridge.

That's not the point. For me living with the crappy monopolistic OS Microsoft provides is easier than the alternative. That doesn't make it better though.

And for the guy who said I could buy components for a PC, try to do that with a Notebook, that will narrow down your choice pretty fast.

I haven't experienced any problems with OO recently, not that I have need to convert files to MS office. But I think there is a program which converts ODF to ms office format. You can also save your documents directly to office 03 format.. of course there is always wine, it can run any version of ms office on linux!

Flex builder is cross-platform.. flash runs perfectly on my linux desktop. Linux does support RDP too, so why don't you use it instead of vnc?

 

So you are saying that linux/osx/bsd/whatever is better than windows but still you use windows? Wtf? Monopolistic? Hey, check out:

Without it, the GPUs in the consoles would be little more than a pipe dream, they helped markedly increase the rate of innovation for the GPU industry by setting a standard and helping everyone get on board towards the same goal.

 

   Have you ever heard of Open GL?  It existed BEFORE Direct 3D/DirectX and is in pretty much every way superior.  The only reason Direct X exists is so M$ could have a proprietary system in place to force you to use Windows.  It's very easy to port Open GL games to other platforms (both game systems like the Wii and PS3 which use Open GL and other OSes like Linux and the Mac which use Open GL) and M$ doesn't want that so they push their inferior proprietary dev kit hard.  Ask any of the best developers about Direct X like the guys at ID; they almost universally say its crap compared to Open GL and many refuse to work with it even though MS tries to push them really hard towards Direct X for everything.  Direct X, like Internet Explorer, like wma...like all the inferior "standards" they try to push is not really a standard but a method for further solidifying the windows monopoly.

   That direct X is in any way a "unifying standard" is complete crap.  It's the one major roadblock in front of almost all windows programs and games running on Linux and OSX through wine and thats the way M$ likes it.

 

   My other arguments for why I hate Microsoft are similarly complex and involved.  Instead I have provided below a video that sums up all that is wrong with Microsoft and after seeing it I would bet you completely will understand my position no matter how big a fanboy you are.

Yes but for three Word/Excel (besides the OO Excel sucks) / Powerpoint document one has a problem. This may not be a problem for you but I get and make them daily



To be honest most Linux distros suck too. I would only contemplate switching to MaxOS which is really better but in this case the compatibility is even worse. Not even Eclipse works there well. But that's a problem with monopolistic fields of economy. Real competition gets killed before it gets going. And I hope nobody denies that MS has a monopole in the OS world.
