You always have a choice. You can choose not to use those programs or use equivelant programs that run on linux. What applications you were talking about? I might be able to help you with your problem.
I could use OpenOffice and live with the conversion problems. I could live with the crappy Flash support in Linux when developing Flex. I could try using VNC instead of RemoteDesktop when working on other Windows PCs (which are used by everyone else in the world). Yeah I could also stop using computers and live under a bridge.
That's not the point. For me living with the crappy monopolistic OS Microsoft provides is easier than the alternative. That doesn't make it better though.
And for the guy who said I could buy components for a PC, try to do that with a Notebook, that will narrow down your choice pretty fast.
