Over half of the Wii's million sellers are hardcore games, this on a supposedly casual system.

...congrats on misreading everything from my post to the current situation.

And weren't you done talking to me? Don't stop now, it's doing me so much good!

actually Sony is the one who should be 50/50 between casual and hardcore. Look at the games on the PSN for example. fl0w, Flower, Super StarDust HD, High Velocity Bowling, the PixelJunk series, Pain, Elefunk, etc. Even on the direct console you have HOME, SingStar, Buzz, and LBP. Sony, and formally Nintendo, are the kings of multi-genre games that fit both casual and hardcore. Nini might have fallen to releasing a hardcore bone every once in a while but Sony has show that it has enough developers making both types of games that the can encompass the entire gaming audience.

Hey Noname 2200, are you a fan of Castlevania: SOTN? I just downloaded it on PSN. Is it any good? You must be excited for that new Castlevania fighting game coming to Wii huh?

...was that a taunt? I'm not trying to be melodramatic here, I'm just honestly not sure what to make of this post since it comes out of left field.

In the highly unlikely even that you were being serious, Symphony was awesome, although I think Aria edged it out. Still, I wouldn't download it from PSN, as I played it a decade ago. I'll just buy Eclessia instead, i.e. the game that's new. I'm not into fighters though, so in all likelihood I'll be skipping Judgment. Even if I was a fan of the genre, though, I'm really skeptical that it'll turn out well, since Iga and 3D just don't seem to mix.

Anything else?

this could have great or bad effects though. Sure doing it this gen will make them tons of money, but by going all casual they will lose alot of gamers. I know alot of people who dislike the wii because of its casualness and have been hardcore nintendo since the begining.

If nintendo loses alot of its fans, and do not catch the casual next gen....where do they go?

I see your point, and agree, though I hope it doesn't happen.

We all rember that Pokemon was a huge fad that lasted about 10 years. Pokemon still survives today thanks to its huge appeal, but the card game/TV show isn't nearly as big as it used to be. Meanwhile the games sell fine thanks to it's many fans. Now, once the Wii is over and done with in another 6 years, the Wii's popularity will effectivly be over, fad or not. Wii will not surive the way Pokemon has, and it is yet to be seen whther Nintendo will get casuals to buy another system or if they will get bored with the "new, in" thing and find something else. IF they do lose their casual fans, at the rate they are going their hardcore base might only be 1/2 the size. GC has about 21M sales- At least 10M were Hardcore Nintendo fans, and I bet up to 15M were. The rest were hardcore gamers and children for the most part. If Nintendo's fanbase splinters, their next console might only sell 10-15M units, which is Sega Saturn territory. If Nintendo gets on that slippery of footing, they might not survive.

This is some of the most convoluted garbage I've ever had the misfortune of reading.  You heard it here first, folks; Nintendo's next console may sell only 10-15 million units.

Very Well said, the OP, while I agree with what he said, really left out the entire PSN section of the presentation showing off a massive selection of "casual" games. If I would pick one console that is trying to be something ot everyone its the PS3, while the 360 is maybe about 70/30 hardcore to casual, and Nintendo just showed 100% games that people that watch E3 or read the reports from E3 wont care about.

Meh, their choice.

I own all three current consoles and a great gaming rig, now thats out of the way.

"Why post something like this when all it will get is PS3 owners blinded to reality replying? BOTH THE PS3 AND BLUE-RAY WILL NOT LAST 3 YEARS! TECHNOLOGY CHANGED TOO FAST!"

"is it Wii FIt that has sold as many as PS3's sold? Thats a LOL Look at the total sales of software is it just me that sees Nintendo titles hitting 10m+ and you say they arent making a difference? Another LOL!"

"Hell, with all the negative hype Sony spin, people just aren't interested cost is too high and to get the true HD experience (1080p, 7.1 surround) you will need a $1000+ system. THAT IS GOING TO DO IT IN A RECESSION! PS4 will not happen"

I do feel that Nintendo is taking a complete casual approach. I'M not sure that they necissarilly want to shun the hardcore fanbase they have (in fact they may feel their innovations appeal to them because a lot of N fans support their innovative techniques through the year). I just think they have changed their M.O. to focus on more casual development and hope that third party picks up the slack. I feel this has been a trend started years ago when they decided to liscence Retro and Rare to make their franchise titles. Basically, In-house will cater to the new N-missive and hope the farms takes care of business for the old fans.

Ugh, after all this time of healing and understanding, we're back to the days of "Nintendo is abandoning the hardcore market!" and "Casuals only!". Call me when it's over.

Hmm I was hoping that SOTN was better since I already beat Aria on DS.

I think this Nintendo vs the core audience is absurd. Nintendo has a casual audience. They have to keep making games for that audience in order to keep the audience entertained and to bring in more of that audience. Nintendo will still make their core games as will 3rd parties. Therefore the Wii is not just a casual only console.

Microsoft spent much of their conference focusing on casual games and ideas. Gears of War was a huge hit for the Xbox 360 but Gears of War 2 took a back seat to the casual titles. As did the Resident Evil 5 trailer and the Final Fantasy XIII announcement. Why, the Xbox 360 is a hard core console but E3 is not only about Hardcore gamers. The mainstream media outlets are present as well. The New York Times, The LA Times, and the Washington Post as well as many Journalist from Magazines such as Wired, Popular Mechanics, and Time. This type of media is where casual live. Where on earth is Microsoft and Nintendo going to find all these mainstream media outlets in one place. No where. Not only will their casual titles be covered in depth but it will also provide free advertising.

Core titles can be revealed to IGN, Gamespot, or 1up and before the day is over every core gamer will know about the game. This is why E3 is a perfect place to pander to the casual audience.

If Nintendo is successful at the moment, it’s because they are good, and I cannot blame them for that. What we should do is try to be just as good.----Laurent Benadiba
