Forums - Gaming Discussion - Is GTA IV being hailed because its not Nintendo

There are college courses on video game culture.

LOL really? I think I would put my kids in a different college . On a serious note you may be correct in the US, I don't know I am sure it isn't like that yet in Europe.

But seriously is that something you want? One reason I like gaming is because nobody tries to take it serious (outside the console wars of course ) and make an art discussion out of it. With movies and music you always have these annoying people who speak about the artistic integrity of the artist and other bullshit.

I believe it can be plausible that GTAIV scores are a bit inflated to take away the spotlight from the Wii. Here are the reason I think it is plausible:

1. this is all happening right after an "anti-wii" week
2. the praise seems to be coming from ps3/xbox biased sites

This is all speculation and opinion, and since I haven't played any GTA game, it could be that GTAIV is indeed a perfect game.

"the truth is out there" ;)

Ask the average gamer, IGN is definitely not a Nintendo-hating site, and they were one of the first reviewers to give it a 10.

Reviewed by the guy who gave Jade Empire (a game with a GR score of 88) 9.9 and still thought it was underrating it.

Give me a break, the IGN review is a joke.

Now i don't think that PS3/360 biased sites only praise GTA IV, but the GameSpot thingie was a bit weird.

Anyway, i wanna ask the people in this topic who own GTA IV (and have played it for more than a couple of hours so that the initial excitement is over) if they think the game is a 10.

IMO the game is more like a 9.5, but that's just me, someone who hated all GTAs before IV and loves GTA IV so far but still i can't just ignore the technical problems in the game like most reviewers seem to be doing.

Pick a course:

Game Courses.

If gaming is to be accepted as something serious, as a career choice and as entertainment, it should also be accepted as an art form. Saying it isn't just insults those who work so hard on what they have designed and made. Graphical designers create characters, writers pen stories and scripts, these are accepted in movies as art then why not in Games?

But the same works for movies as games, there are movies that are just for fun and nobody is mean to take seriously, but the there are games the masterpeices of story. Some stories match or even exceed those of the greatest in cinema. Yet should be ignored because they are just 'games'?

Hmm, pie.

Prematurely judging it after about 8 hours of play, i'd say about a 9.2 or so for me. I would like to point out though that I don't believe any of the games that have gotten 10's in reviews have ever deserved it, but if they should get those 10s constantly then so should GTA IV, because to me it's just as good as Ocarina of Time ever was to me.

Agreed, a 9.2 sounds fair to me.

Speaking of GameSpot...

"We never posted a review with the score of 9.5. What you saw was a bug that sometimes causes scores to appear on the site before reviews go live. Sometimes that score is correct, sometimes it isn't. In this case, it wasn't."

Source

"Rather than claiming bias or money, I can tell you the reason for the score "bump" was simple.

The 9.5 was a red herring to see how people would react. Sure enough, people flipped out over it not getting a 10, and people are still angry that the score was "changed." The real score was 10, and if they felt it was a 9.5, it would have stayed that way. Whenever there's a change in the score or review, there's a note explaining why. In this case, everyone got duped when they put a 9.5 up."

I can't help but put GameSpot on my ignore list ^_^

These theories may all be wrong, but Gamespot's change of mind (along with their reputation) doesn't help at all with putting them down...

My Mario Kart Wii friend code: 2707-1866-0957

I doubt it's an anti-Nintendo conspiracy. Though it wouldn't suprise me if some review scores were based on wanting to see the long time champ unseated. Personally I doubt it deserves scores as high as it's getting. The question isn't whether or not it's a great game, but rather whether or not it's perfect. When the reviewer cites issues with the gameplay and on-line portions, however minor, then it makes you wonder why the game got a perfect score.

I know you believe you understand what you think I said but I don't think you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

GTA4 is a great game and deserves 90-94%. But its not a perfect game.

+95% is over-excitement and over-ratio like the Halo3-craze.

99% on Meta-critic is just not funny.

For a good clue into what GTA!V was rated about, just look at the content of the topics about them.

In the threads about Mario Kart Wii and Smash Bros Brawl, about 90% of content involve "holy crap i want this game! look at this/that/whatever!"

In threads about GTA IV, i see "It's teh nintendo killer, lets compare pixelcounts, colors are slightly different on 360/PS3. 360/PS3 version is far superior!"

So yeah, it does come across to me as being a "We have to like it, cause otherwise Nintendo wins for realz!"

Seppukuties is like LBP Lite, on crack. Play it already!

10 out of 10 means it's perfect. I haven't played it but that seems a bit awkward that it's getting 10's everywhere. I'm sure that it's a phenomenal game like all of the GTA games are if you into them. I personally get bored of jacking cars and killling innocent people. What I'm saying is this, if it would have normally gotten a 9.5 they bumped it up to 10 because they know that the Wii is destroying the other two consoles. Yes, I'm saying conspiracy, but only slightly. It legitimately I'm sure is a great game, but so is Mario Kart Wii which isn't exactly seeing tens or even nines is it? See? Conspiracy. Also, please stop refering to it as the greatest game of all time. Have you played through all 100+ hours of it? If you haven't, then you cannot back up that claim and one more thing... conspiracy.
