Half the people in this poll are in denial. Switch is dead in the water, not even an upgrade or a new fully fledged hybrid console could keep up with the leap in hardware here. After the initial cross gen period, Switch ain't getting shit on the big budget front but spin offs. It's not feasible.

No one's in denial about the super-budget games rarely coming to Switch.  A handful of miracle ports aside, that's the status quo now.

But the Switch is obviously being heavily supported by 3rd parties and will continue to be heavily supported as long as it's selling more software than its competitors.  No matter how you slice things, Sony and Microsoft will be starting with a install base of zero come this fall.  The Switch will be at 60 million and most likely will still be the top-selling system of the 2020 holidays (due to supply constraint if nothing else).

If you're a 3rd-party developer, do you choose the system that's in its moneymaking prime, or the one still in its infancy where your game can be expected to be discounted to $20 before the system's install base reaches 10 million?

You are making a very big spin on second paragraph.

Switch isn't selling more software than competitors. You may say "developers who sell more on switch than on PS4+X1". Otherwise you are plainly wrong. PS4 sell much more SW in total than switch also the sum of 3rd party games sold on PS4 is bigger than the sum of 3rd party games sold on Switch.

I see it happening like the Wii all over again, in that it'll have some games, albeit some spinoffs, due to the fact that later games in a new gen are going to require more power, and Switch by the first few years isn't going to cut the butter.

Either that or devs absolutely water down those games for other platforms, just so the Switch could run it, to which I'd be miffed.

I'd actually be over the moon if from 2021 onwards Switch got third party support like the Wii; I honestly think the Wii's third party lineup is highly underrated, it got a bunch of really cool titles like Monster Hunter Tri, Red Steel 2, No Mores Heroes 1 & 2, the Goldeneye reimagining, de Blob 1 & 2, Silent Hill Shattered Memories, Sonic Colours, Fatal Frame, Medal of Honour Heroes 2, etc.

As to the latter, there's zero chance that'll happen so you can rest easy.

They'll continue to get indie games plus ports of old legacy titles and the occasional major third party game, but that will be rare.

The days of the "mid-budget Nintendo exclusive" (ie: Boom Blox, Red Steel, GoldenEye 007) are kinda dead, devs will just port those games to the PS5/XBSX which will get all the same indie games as well.

Doesn't really matter if they're exclusive tbh, the Goldeneye remake and No More Heroes 1 were ported to PS3/360, didn't stop me enjoying them on Wii.

That tier of game is just not being made much any more to begin with. If it is it's made for the PS4/XB1/PC first, soon to be PS5/XBSX/PC as the target platform.

Not necessarily true; Team Sonic Racing was recently made as a mid-budget multiplatform game with Switch as the baseline. Games like that, Oninaki, Yooka Laylee & The Impossible Lair, etc aren't going to just vanish and won't be exclusively restricted to PS5/XSX spec. Those are the same sort of games that the Wii got.

Yes, for two reasons

First, there will likely be a slower adoption to next gen. Last time we had a ton of cross-gen releases. Third party developers have become more risk adverse with the advent of HD, and this will be the same for the 9th generation machines. In fact, with the Coronavirus potentially hurting supply of next-gen systems you may see formally Gen 9 titles becoming cross platform. This will obviously mean more ports coming to Switch.

Second, Japanese developers. Switch has done very well in Japan as well as abroad. Nintendo has never struggled to get third party support from Japan and this will likely continue. Keep in mind developers were not willing to develop for Switch initially due to how poorly the Wii U sold. There are probably some titles that started development in 2017 and 2018 that would be coming out now.

I'm afraid you completely missed my point.  Whether the Switch is currently selling more than the PS4 is neither here nor there.  I was speaking to the future and PS5's lifecycle.  The PS5 will not spring into being with the PS4's 100 million install base.  It's going to take years for the PS5 to be able to gain enough customers to match the Switch unless their customers are buying games at like several times the rate of the average Switch owner.

It's not a console war thing.  It's just an acknowledgement of the difference in software sales potential between a mature console in the prime of its earning power and a new console on the scene.  PS5 will get there, it's just gonna take awhile.  And by the time that happens, we'll be talking about the Switch 2 or whatever.

If we look at software shipment during the start of new gen the valleys haven't been that deep because the 3rd parties will mostly be doing crossgen.

When you say "it's competitors" that isn't PS5, either you are talking only about direct competitors in which case it would have none or you talk about all.

Yeah. I think the number of games might reduce slightly, but anything that doesn't push hardware will still come to what will be the biggest userbase at the time.

If we're lucky, we might even see some games developed from the ground up for the Switch, which would be nice.
