Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Papa Phil: "Xbox has to mean quality games"

Tagged games:

If Xbox doesn't start taking notes from Japanese game design (Persona, Nier, Nioh, most Nintendo games) or Indie PC design (Factorio, Outward, A Hat in Time), then I can't see myself ever moving to Xbox. These developers are putting out such fantastic, innovative games, while Xbox just churns out the exact same stuff year after year.

Personally, I don't care about Xbox anymore.
Their way forward is play anywhere, subscription services and streaming games which I am totally not  interested in.
Maybe that is the future, but for the forceable future Sony is doing exactly the way i want. The traditional way of buying and owning games.
Sure gamepass is only an option and you can still buy games separately.
But it feels like Microsoft is really pushing hard for gamepass and might eventually go complete subscription only like Netflix.
Gamepass is a great service but it's not for me. I like to own my games instead of paying monthly fee and not owning them.

lol GamePass is never going to replace buying the game, just like Netflix hasn’t replaced buying movies. MS makes way more money by providing the option.

People forget that xbox basically gave up this gen, 2 years into it.
They cut funding, cancelled games, cut games & cut back costs of games.

Them going out to get new studios isnt for this gen.
Its for the next one, and something that ll first start showing its pay off, in year 2023-2024 and onwards.

"As much as it feels like this is something Phil has been saying for a few years, it certainly feels different now that we can actually see the huge expansion of studios "

Basically saying wait for mid - next gen...

You have to have alot of trust in xbox, at this point to just blindly accept what their saying.
The studio's are there, time see if they will do all the good things gamers expect of them.

Also remember this guy is the same guy that said Voodoo Vince was his favorite game ever.
Then what happend? He cut funding for it, so they couldnt even do a proper remaster/remake.
Instead it relaunched with original assets.

Do you guys think, even after saying that, he'll green light a Voodoo Vince 2?
His talk is cheap.

It is actually fascinating how different people's perspectives can be. At the beginning of this gen MS was my least favorite out of the three companies; but they won me over with the Gamespass, BC and Play Anywhere.

Today I see them as the most consumer friendly out of the bunch. I mean, while PS4 and Switch owners are seeminly happy (and proudly) paying full price for remasters (and straight up ports) of last gen games, X1 owners are able to play what are basically remasters of last gen games for free. And now you see PS4 and Switch fans claiming "MS has brought nothing to the table this gen" while at the same time hoping for Sony/Nintendo to implement BC with enhancements on the PS5/Next Switch, something that we all know Nintendo will never do since their fans are so proud to claim "Nintendo games never drop in price!"

And it is even more interesting to see Nintendo fans claming, "MS has brought nothing to the table this gen," while at the same time wishing for MS not only to bring Gamepass to Switch but also some games like Ori and Halo because "Switch owners don't have a whole lot of great FPS games to choose from," like Curl-6 recently admitted.

You cant play "consumer friendly".
Thats basically the short of it.

Switch guys are happy with the games catalog they have, and the 1st party titles their getting, same with PS4 users.

Gamepass (good value, play A/AA games without buying them)
Play anywhere (ability to swap from pc to console, and have it auto-update save files ect) (doesnt work for everything right?)
BC (something everyone should have, but Cell -> x86, makes this basically impossible on the PS4)

^
I guess some consumers (like you) value this alot.
However I suspect most would gladly give all that way, to just have better catalog of 1st party games on their platforms.
Otherwise why would Switch & Playstation be selling so well instead of Xbox One?

Also you can crap on remasters, but alot of people actually enjoy them.

Spyro Reignited (on both)
Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (on both)
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (on both)
FFX + FFX2
FFXII
ect

And who complains about these types of games? No one, because their just great games.

"happy (and proudly) paying full price for remasters (and straight up ports) of last gen games"

Just do like most, and wait abit.... Sony runs tons of specials and offers, and prices drop on games.
No shame in not going in day1 imo, esp if you have a backlog of games to play already, its just good sense to wait for offers.

Sorry, but to me that goes A LONG way.

"Switch guys are happy with the games catalog they have, and the 1st party titles their getting, same with PS4 users."

And have you stopped to think that maybe, just maybe, X1 users are also happy with the catalog they have?

"Gamepass (good value, play A/AA games without buying them)"

Have you taken the time to look into the GamePass list? Because there are plenty, and I mean PLENTY, of AAA games in there.

"Play anywhere (ability to swap from pc to console, and have it auto-update save files ect) (doesnt work for everything right?)"

I guess not. But I wouldn't believe you for one second if you told me that you wouldn't like the ability to play God of War on your laptop when you are away at no extra cost.

"BC (something everyone should have, but Cell -> x86, makes this basically impossible on the PS4)"

And yet PS4 and Switch don't have it, and I don't see Sony and Nintendo getting any hate for it. And No, It is not impossible to emulate PS3 games on PS4. Difficult to do it? maybe, but impossible it is not. I'm 100% sure that engineers who have access to the core hardware and OS of both consoles can figure it out if they want to. Sony didn't do it just because they did not deem the effort worth it.

"Also you can crap on remasters, but alot of people actually enjoy them."

I'm not crapping on remasters. I just find it curious that people are hating so much on the only company that basically offered them for free this gen while at the same time praising the companies that charged full price for straigh up ports.

"Otherwise why would Switch & Playstation be selling so well instead of Xbox One?"

Sorry, are we going to switch the conversation now to "who won this generation?" Because I was just answering to the claim that "People forget that xbox basically gave up this gen, 2 years into it."

In terms of software developement (games), they clearly did cut back alot.
They didnt litteraly give up (stop competeing at all), but they stopped trying to win vs sony, early into the gen (imo thats giveing up).

I stated it was in terms of games, and funding for that area.

I've waited half a decade for this to actual happen, I guess I can wait again...

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

What are your sources for them "clearly cutting back a lot" on software? What games did they originally plan to release had the gen gone well that they ended up not releasing? What games ended up having these big budget cuts? What games were meant to be massive AAA titles but instead turned into $20-40 small titles? All you've listed so far to back up your claim is speculation about funding for a remaster of a smaller scale title and uh, Scalebound being canceled? A game that literally looked like dog shit transformed into a video game? Judging by your "A-AA" comment about GamePass, I'm just going to assume you're basing your opinions off of what you want to see rather than what is really there.

Also, you do realize Sony's own production of video games has slowed down quite a bit as well, right? Are they cutting funding as well? Where have their games been all gen? Did they realize the WiiU was a massive failure and Microsoft would never recover from the Xbone reveal and they "gave up" early on too?
