Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Donkey Kong Country vs Yoshi's Island

Which is better?

Donkey Kong Country 39 52.00%

Yoshi's Island 36 48.00%

Total:75

I find the gameplay in Donkey Kong Country much better than in Yoshi's Island both when doing the levels regularly and when searching for the extras.

Yoshi’s Island, easy.

I find it to be the best 2D platformer ever made, and is my #4 favorite game. It’s level design is pretty much perfect. I don’t even mind the baby, it’s as good an incentive as anything to just try to get better. Donkey Kong Country meanwhile never clicked as well with me. Could be the more floaty or loose mechanics and controls (I can see the irony here considering Yoshi can actually float), if you know what I mean. That same feeling is also why I never really like Mario World while Mario Bros. 3 is brilliant.

Also the poll is 50/50.

I gave it to Yoshi's Island even though I like Donkey Kong Country a bit more, but I'm only doing that because I'm under the impression that DKC is only the first one released in 1994 vs Yoshi's Island, which was released in 1995.

If it was ANY of the DKC games vs Yoshi's island, I'd give it to DKC2 or DKC3, since DKC1 is the weakest of the trilogy by far.

Yoshi's Island basically birthed Modern Nintendo. Every level is unique, they did the four-step level design philosophy that introduced an idea, iterated on it, intensified it, then put it all together at the end all while having some of the best art and sound direction of any game. It also created a game that's timeless by make its art direction one that is simple buy stylized and therefore timeless. DKC still looks wonderful but it doesn't look AS good today as it did in 1994.

My ranking of the DKC/Mario games:

1 - Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
2 - Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's King Quest
3 - Super Mario World
4 - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
5 - Donkey King Country

Though Nostalgia plays a huge part in Mario World besting Yoshi's Island.

My Console Library:

PS5, Switch, XSX

PS4, PS3, PS2, PS1, WiiU, Wii, GCN, N64 SNES, XBO, 360

3DS, DS, GBA, Vita, PSP, Android

Cant believe its this close.... DKC should be winning by a mile.
Yoshi's Island is pretty good but its not as great as the DKC series on the SNES.

Growing up it was pretty close, maybe slightly favored DKC. Now it's DKC and it's not even close. Going back to Yoshi's Island recently, the game hasn't quite aged well at least for me. All the scavenger hunts, annoying baby Mario wailing, and constant clunky aiming your egg can all get a bit aggravating. DKC still holds up for me. I can go back and play that game any time and still enjoy it. Probably DKC2 moreso, though that game is a little more maddening in terms of its difficulty.

This. DKC has aged better imo.

If I have to pick one it'd be DCK. Although really both games are just ok. I very much prefer a 2D Mario or Sonic game to either one.

I really like DKC (especially the first one) but easily Yoshi's Island for me.

DKC is a fun platformer with beautiful visuals. Yoshi's Island is a masterpiece and probably one of my top 3 platformers of all time along with Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros 3. Even Tropical Freeze (my favorite DKC game) can't compete with the first Yoshi's Island. Its level design is great (love collecting everything) and the boss battles are among the best in gaming. Even regarding the aesthetics Yoshi compares favorably for me as I love the art style (those crayon colored backgrounds still impress me).

Yeah, I love DKC, specially DKC2. Gameplay, graphics and audio are amazing. But I can say the exactly same thing about Yoshi's Island, though choice, but I'd give Yoshi's islad the edge for personal reasons. It meant a lot more to my childhood. Still, both amazing games.

I remember playing the heck out of Yoshi's Island as a kid, but I have way fonder memories of Donkey Kong Country. Better soundtrack, characters, levels. DKC is also one of those games that I go back to from time to time. I probably will never have any desire to revisit Yoshi's Island (Woolly World is the best Yoshi game anyway :P).

I replay DKC 1, 2 and 3 every once and a while. Really solid games that aged pretty well.

WHOAH! Totally disagree there. Not even close.

There are many WAY better choices for Nintendo's masterpiece. Super Mario Bros 3, Ocarina of Time, Mario Galaxy, and Breath of the Wild for starters.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.
