2018 has been an amazing year for PS4, which seems to be unstoppable even after 5 years...and it's not the whole story, as 2019 will be amazing too with all the AAA titles supposed to be released next year and a likely price-cut.

And i really think the following gen is even going to get better, if you think about it then it kinda has the right setup to it.

Sony wants to keep momentum going and let that momentum overflow into nextgen while still partly keeping it in the current and you can expect Microsoft to do everything they can to go back to the xbox360 popularity and to do that they need to get a lot more competitive with Sony on the exclusives and we have seen them prepare for it in the recent years or at least we can say that we have seen the signs for it.

Sony should also predict Microsoft competitiveness for next gen so it can be a possibility they also try to boost exclusives.

And Nintendo is a case on its own competitors wise and does not really have to share its market with the other ones as it has such a coexisting nature with its exclusives and focus/audience but now with the switch they on themselves are also in an uprising again and i am expecting them to boost and hype it even more with an upcoming new switch model.

Yeah I always say this. This gen ps4 didn't have major momentum leading into it or a massive subscriber base subbing to ps plus. Next gen ps5 will be coming off the second most successful console ever so if they play their cards right that will benefit it.

Yep, I agree.  Next gen will be even better;  PS5 will continue the huge success of PS4, and it will go further pushing the exclusives and VR even more.  Competition from Microsoft will be stronger, and Nintendo will keep going "different" on its own, low specs hardware with other kind of innovation and different time-frame.  Next from Nintendo will be an upgraded version of Switch, after that I have no idea, only Ninty knows what kind of "devilry" they will pull out to catch the attention again :D

The 3DS is reaching the end of its line. I just hope it has enough left in the tank to reach 80 million units shipped.

Xbox did very decent compared on how far they usually are behind the others saleswise.

And that basically sustained by a single market versus the others that sell well WW. They have been helding well in USA.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Hey,

vgchartz got quoted by the german site computerbase.de. They were posting an article about how the PS4 took over the PS3. However, they were unsure if those numbers are shipped or sold to customers. I already told them in the forums that numbers from vgc are always sold to customers. But it would be nice if I could get some mod or admin or something to confirm that, because I couldn't quite find a source for my claim.

Thanks in advance!

And in case anybody wants to know, here is the link to the article: https://www.computerbase.de/2018-12/ps4-haeufiger-verkauft-playstation-3-meistverkauftes-spiel/

edit: Ok, I got it. In the platform totals it says "all figures are total shipments from manufacturers"

Weird. I always thought vgc numbers were sold-through. But maybe that's only true for the weekly numbers? Hell, I've been here for years and don't know that stuff, fuck me. =D

All the consoles that are discontinued uses officials shiped numbers, while systems still on the market uses vgc numbers

My estimation for the last weeks of this Q3 2018.

I don't feel accurate enough yet to pretend to have realistic predictions.

I think with Smash and Pokemon there's a high chance sales will be even higher, maybe even knocking on the 2M ceiling on week 51

I thought that I could put a bit more, but I wanted to estimate a more moderate curve, with these numbers, the 20M should pass.

This curve is a ...."VGCHARTZ sales estimation on fiscal year", it means that you can add 10-12% from this then to obtain these shipped results that Nintendo will announce in their report.

So the Switch sales so far, compared to last FY, are 20% up. If it stays that way we're looking at around 16 mil units sold this FY, which makes sense as this or next week normally passes 50% sales mark (it's 8 million so far). To get to 20 mil target, Switch would need a significant boost in sales (around 40% in the same period of time). I'll believe it when I see 2 mil figures next week,
