EDIT: changed title, on reflection 2014 was a weak year, while it had some key titles and it's the low that started this generations rise I think it should be cut. It was mid 2015 when things started firing on all cylinders, specifically the release of The witcher 3. Things have been poppin ever since, consistently on an ever rising incline of epicness and it has yet to reach it's climax.
I'm going to put the negative aside for a second like microtransations and shady business practices among third party devs and publishers. Some diversity hiring gone wrong and politics entering the game space once again as well as a lack of AA games.
TL;DR : Personally I think, in the same way we have hit the golden age of television, these past four years of gaming have been the best ever across all eight generations and arcades, as well as the two to years to come. The pinnacle above all other generations between the PS4, the switch and PC/steam and VR and even the 3ds staying strong and the Vita taking every bullet like a champ. A good chuck of my top ten...hell top 25 or top 50 have released starting in June 2014 with Divinity OS and right through the near four years following, title after title have consistently slammed into my top spots.
I'm sure I'll miss a few on a list like this but just lets grab a quick overview of the wealth of games we have this gen, the best of the best, the dogs bollachs line up...
The witcher 3
Divinity OS (and hopefully DOS2)
Horizon Zero dawn
Dirt Rally (both VR and non VR)
Forza horizon series
Wipout collection (VR)
Uncharted 4 A series I'd never have thought would compete for top spots)
MGS5 GZ + TTP
God of War soft reboot
Dragon age inquisition.
Xcom 2 + war of the chosen
NexMachina + Resogun + Alienation = the trifecta of bullet hell games
Monster hunter World
Final fantasy 14 heavensward and Storm blood
Zelda BoTW (not up there with my best but I'll add it because it's got so much praise, there must be something to it I'm not seeing)
Super Mario Oddessy (Haven't played much of it but I know from what I have played it's briliance)
Destiny (an fps mmo ffs)
Hell blade SS
Diablos updated ultimate evil edition + reaper of souls
Tombraider soft reboot
Doom soft rebbot
Darkest Dungeon.... God damn there are too many to name, I'm probably missed near half of them but you get the point.
Virtual reality itself and a whole slew of Virtual reality titles such as Superhot VR, Rush of blood, Operation Warcade, Skyrim VR, Blaster of the universe, Sprint vector, Farpoint, windlands...I could go on listing games in VR that are er 10's for me but it'll be a long list.
A whole host of excellent remasters done from the ground up or simply just made better than the original like The Crash Bandicoot trilogy, Soon to be Skyro trilogy, Shadow of the collosus, Gow 3 remastered, TLOU, Heavy rain .etc, etc etc. Games from last gen that many didn't get to play for one reason or another but now get to immerse themselves in with a fresh coat of paint without having to feel as if they are playing a dated subpar game, for the most part at least
A bag load of Indies that rival games from generations past and give 5th/6th gen/6th gen best of gen contenders a run for their money. We see less AA games but when we do, they hit hard and strong and we rarely get roped into crappy games like in previous generations as we have so many diverse critics, personallities and even forum users to spread opinions and get an easier idea of what we will like, will not or grab insight into a game without spending our money and being disappointed after an hour.
On top of that JRPG's have boomed harder than they did in the ps2 era and are continuing to get better localization in the west giving us more and more variety and sometimes hidden awesomness once blocked behind a culture barrier. It's clear to see many a folk are diving into japanese games this generation and Japanese companies are seeing greater success and more of a willingness to localize and standing up against the censoring of their culture within those games.
We can dive into games before they release this generation if we choose to, a foolish choice in my eyes but one that many seem to like doing. We are finally getting film based games that aren't simply cash grabs with similar mechanics each time like Shadow or Mordor, South Park or Spiderman. Niche or half dead genres have boomed back onto the stage and competition among them is at a high.
We have consoles that are all doing well, no one is clearly loosing and the competition is fierce and welcome and we are seeing the ones who are or have taken a hit, reviving themselves. Nintendo with the switch after the WiiU Disaster, Xbox promising to be better on exclusives even Valve hinting that they want to get back into game development and pushing to clean up steam. We have consoles that Rival PC's and PC builds so cheap they might as well be classified as consoles.
Everyone is winning here. The games companies both devs and publishers, the console manufacturers and above all else the players. I think this is the best period in gaming...period and it's not even peaked yet.
Am I being overly positive here or do you agree? And lets not forget the amazing lineup yet to come, off the top of my head...
Red dead redemption
The Last of Us part 22
Soul caliber 6
..and so many more.
PS. Sorry for the grammar, my keyboard is glitching out.
