Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii winning the "exclusivity war"

@radioiorobert:

Man...thats IS a lot of shovelware....but compared to a library of over 10,000 amongst the PS1 and PS2, it doesn't seem like much, whereas now, games like Carnival Games and Bratz Kids make up the MAJORITY of the Wii's library.

And as for 1st party games, what I meant was, they are a game publishing company. Of course they're going to have to most "exclusives" because they rely, basically, solely on the first party, so damn near every game that comes out for the system WILL be exclusive. You're going to see a Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, etc of every Nintendo console, and you're going to see tons of spinoffs of said franchises. And then even still, chances are that new IPs for the Wii will probably be made by Nintendo. I remember a while back when people were saying "The Wii IS hardcore! It's got Trauma Center and Day of Crisis"......Nintendo published games.....

If Sony or M$ was anything like Nintendo, then what? Who would be winning the "exclusivity war" if every hardware maker made all the games for the system too?

Ugh, these threads always end up exactly the same. I would lock it but if I did that two more would pop up in its place and then I'd get the added bonus headache of people bitching that their thread was locked.

Get this straight people: all consoles have good games. It doesn't matter if to you if I like x game better than y game and it doesn't matter that I think whatever games are quality or not. Don't let people on the internet get to you because they absolutely do not matter.

That's just the problem though. The quality of the libraries aren't even the subject, it's the best selling exclusives for each console. The quality argument is simply damage control from angry fanboys that would rather get banned in a fit of trolling than just concede that the Wii is winning something.

I'm also completely baffle how the typical "Wii is in a different market" damage control managed to get slipped between the posts in this thread. It doesn't even apply...

 And they are the ones I'm talking to.  Who the crap cares if the Wii is winning something?  Do games like Uncharted suddenly become worse because the Wii has more exclusives regardless of quality?  Of course not.

Good for Wii, Who say third party exclusivity don´t sell in Wii?

 umm.....have u been hiding undera rock for the past 2 years? :)

Ninty is commonly criticized for having loads of shovelware and few, if any quality 3rd party exclusives

I guess ill explain a few things in a simple way:

Exclusives will bring people to a console wether its 1st party or 3rd party, and it will benefit the console maker double if their 1st party titles are the main attraction as they make a big profit on game sales aswell as producing more console sales.

The reason people say wii 1st party titles dont count is because some people dont like the type of games nintendo produce, for THOSE PEOPLE ps3/xbox360 has a much better line of exclusives and therefor they will want those consoles to "win" until wii can show them the type of game they like aswell.

So both people sides arguing in this thread are correct depending on which perspective you are looking from.

I'm hoping for more Wii third party games up around the quality of Z&W and NMH. Neither were AAA, but they were very good and indicate that at least some devs are getting a handle on how to use the Wii properly.

@BMaker11

Just remember that NO ONE believed the Wii would sell, the drums were beating that Ninty should stop making consoles and just publish software.  So there were no AAA 3rd party games in development. We are just starting to see few now, mostly everything to come out has been a rush to get games to the market. After E3 we will see how things are starting to line up though.

"And if Sony or M$ was anything like Nintendo, then what?" Easy. They would be more profitable.

"Who would be winning the "exclusivity war" if every hardware maker made all the games for the system too?"

1: Ninty DOESN't make ALL the games. Of course they led the way with the Wii, because they believed in the system. Almost no one else did. No one wanted make games for the loser in the last 2 gen's console wars, it's a big risk. The same thing happened with the DS, Ninty put out out most of the games the first 18 months to 2 years, everyone thought PSP & PSDomination would kill Ninty's handheld business off. It's 2008 and the PSP is JUST NOW starting to get a few punches in. And PSP had incredible third party support early in it's life. They all went back to DS when it became the monster it has been the last few years. Now that the PSP is selling, they need to get games sales up, that will bring better 3rd party support back.

2. And if Sony or M$ could put out first party games with the same return Ninty has, they would. Why did M$ buy RARE? To get Ninty quality titles on XBox consoles (which hasn't worked out so well for them). They both have some great 1st party games, but they would love to have the profit center Ninty has built.

Plus with 1st Party the games can't leave your console to go to another (ie: Final Fantasy leaving Ninty for Sony, Monster Hunter 3 leaving PS CONSOLE to go to Wii, and GTA leaving Sony to go multiplatform. !st party stays with your console, the end.  Good quality 1st party games = good business.

Given most games are 360/PS3 or wii that makes sense. But as far as quality Wii is dead last and things aren't changing.

Red has a point here -- the Wii has the most low rated games to go along with its most high rated games.  And neither the 360 or the PS3 can compete with the Wii for absolutely highest rated games.

Agreed. Exclusives are the ultimate system sellers (though with the Wii controls probably played a bigger part). Like GTA? You can get it for either PS360. Want MGS4 or GT5? Get a PS3. Bioshock/Halo gotta have 360. That was the point of the original article, Nintendo has a lot of helpful exclusives that they make and it helps them sell games. If Sony had been able to buy 50+% of Rockstar, there is no way GTA would be on a M$ console.

It's nice to see someone write about how important exclusives are to a console and realize that 1st and 2nd party titles are key (the orignal article that started this thread.) Nintendo always gets bashed for having so many successful 1st party games that 3rd parties can't compete. Great 1st party games kept them alive the last 2 gens (both of which they lost), and gave them a good library before AAA 3rd party titles would even go into development.

Exclusives built the Sony brand,  but quite a few past system sellers have become multi plats. Sony & M$ need to bring a larger amount of high quality 1st and 2nd party games to the table, that way a PS3 might not have such a scary first year. Sony has a lot more than M$, with God of War, GT5, Ratchet & Clank, etc.

Sony's catching up now, but if M$ hadn't gotten any of the previous PS exclusive heavy hitters on their system, Sony would be in 3rd in this race. Why is M$ going after so many exclusive RPG's? To take some of that market that Sony has dominated the last 2 gens.

I mean really, 3 years ago who would've expected we'd be wondering if M$ could pull off selling the most copies of a GTA game?

No, I think YOU have a perfectly valid point, but if what RedArmia said can somehow translate to what you said, then I have some apologies to make.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

But this is the fault of the third party not Nintendo, the third party doesn´t believe in the Wii and therefore don´t make good games for it.
