Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony: More Focus On 1st Party Titles

SAN MATEO, Calif., March 1, 2018 – Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) today announced that it will change its organizational structure effective April 1, 2018, to further reinforce its business and operational strength to continue to spearhead and remain the leader in the constantly evolving business environment.

As PlayStation® continues to bring together more customers around the world than ever before, meeting the needs of the globally connected PlayStation®4 community, while also responding to specific requirements in each regional market is an increasingly important priority. In order for SIE to remain competitive and deliver on its commitment to make PlayStation the Best Place to Play, it will reorganize the structure of its regional companies. Effective April 1, sales and marketing divisions that currently exist within Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA)*1, Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe (SIEE) *2 and Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia (SIEJA)*3 will report directly to Jim Ryan, Deputy President and Head of Global Sales and Marketing, SIE.  In order to ensure coordination between organizations and support functions that are overseen locally, John Kodera, President and CEO, SIE, and Jim Ryan will assume the role of executive in charge of regions, Kodera with responsibility for Americas and Japan Asia and Ryan for Europe.  Current SIEJA President Atsushi Morita will report directly to Kodera to support management of cross-functional activities for the Japan Asia markets.

Increasingly, the value of interactive entertainment is differentiated by the broad spectrum and depth of experiences that it provides to customers. As such, SIE’s mission to create and develop the most attractive and powerful first party titles has become more important than ever. To fulfill this purpose, also effective April 1, Shawn Layden, current Chairman of Worldwide Studios (WWS) and SIEA President, will concentrate his focus on WWS continuing to provide platform-defining content that helps drive the growth of SIE.

Additionally, in the global functions, Phil Rosenberg*4 has been appointed Head of Global Publisher and Developer Relations as of January 2018, and Hideaki Nishino*5 will assume the role of Head of Platform Planning and Management effective April 1.

Sweet

I'm wondering if it could also mean purchasing one or two new companies.

Bluepoint?

They're already doing an amazing job on that front. So much so that MORE focus on first party almost seems surprising in a way. It's probably because there's so many reasons to be cynical about the industry at large. It's heartening to see they continue to realize what butters the bread.

Should purchase Insomniac

We're having this conversation over at resetera. Would there really be any point in purchasing companies that already support Sony heavily with exclusive content?

I’m sure there would be benefits for both parties from such a deal :)

Maybe ... but I would sooner they spent that money on fresh blood, so to speak. What better company is there that's proven their ability without actually making their own content? Bluepoint just seems an obvious choice to me although clearly other companies would be welcome too!

Sony are already doing great. Only negative for me was not getting evolution to make a new motorstorm or reboot based on the original or the first 2.

Maybe they can contract code masters or get blue point games to remaster the trilogy.

Sony has been doing a fantastic job ramping up amazing 1st party games last gen and they dont seem to be stopping anytime soon.

They're already getting strong 3rd party support so its great that they still want to continue their 1st party games cause we all know you cant rely on 3rd party alone to sell consoles either. I love how diverse their titles are too.
