Forums - Gaming Discussion - Zelda Breath of the Wild is dominating GOTY awards

To bad as Odissey would easily be my choice over it

Yay... RE7 also got one. That is my spiritual GOTY
Also, who the hell gave a GOTY for Uncharted, Preyt and AC:O. All 3 are solid games but come on, they are pretty far off from GOTY material, and this is comming from a huge Uncharted fan.

We can trust reviewers but only if its for our game of choice. So in this case reviewers are correct :P

It's generally a bad idea to trust more than a few specific reviewers you have chosen for yourself. No point in listening to reviewers who don't share your values and priorities even if their taste sometimes aligns by accident.

But yeah, it has been a pretty miserable year for me. Basically all of the games I looked forward to disappointed me deeply on some level and all for different reasons. And I really had a lot of games I was looking forward to :(

Next year should be a lot better though. Far Cry 5, Octopath and DQ11 should all be pretty good.

Sorry that you had a rough year. Hope next year will be better for you.

It deserves every single one of them. It's truly a masterpiece. 2017 kicked ass when it comes to gaming, best year in a long time!

Signature goes here!

Wonder how long until these game awards mean nothing.

I don't mean game awards in general, but like that the Game Awards that we just had broadcast become the only one that matters.

You know like the Oscars or something. No one cares at all what Forbes thinks is the movie of the year, they only care what the Oscars think. (No idea what awards show is what, so Oscars could be music, tv, or whatever, so don't nit pick me for using Oscars as example)

But in video games we care about every reviewer in the world and brag about 300 game of the year awards given out. I wonder how long until only 1 matters and others don't even bother. This years game awards was a vast improvement in looking more professional. It may one day sit next to all the other pointless shows like Grammy's, Oscars, Golden Globes, Emmy, ect

I mean wasn't the game awards voted on by a ton of critics? So how many of these 60 awards Zelda has gotten already been from people that voted for Zelda in the Game Awards?

Let's not pretend to not know what's up. If this was a Playstation game, you would not be in this thread. Besides, it's not being offended, it's a sarcastic response to a stupid stance to have (even with your elaborated explanation which doesn't even make sense). Even if you don't trust certain reviewers, how does that relate to the topic at hand, which is BotW dominating across the overwhelming majority of publications/reviewers? Why was this "friendly reminder" necessary?

Friendly reminder to myself. I mean I was hurting the most that BOTW didn't turn out as I hoped and I did get hyped up a bit more after the reviews were so positive, only to be crushed even more with disappointment. Same happened with SMO. So yeah, if anyone needs a friendly reminder to not get hyped up more by reviews it's me.

And I wouldn't be so sure about PS4 games. Next year we're gonna have GoW and TLOU2. Two games I'm very much looking forward to and definitely gonna buy. I'm already preparing myself for disappointment with GoW but I still have very high hopes for TLOU2. Let's see how this turns out and if I'm gonna be disappointed yet again.

Also, what doesn't make sense about picking a small number of reviewers you trust instead of blankly believing in aggregated scores of reviewers you don't even know?

You must have some unrealistic expectations if you thought Odyssey was disappointing.

I expected nothing less than something on the level of Mario 64. The glowing reviews misled me to believe that it was so. But much like BOTW, while the core game was absolutely solid, it had to do some stupid stuff that completely turned me off in the end.

I won't indulge in here what my specific problems are with each of the disappointing games. Gonna do a separate thread about it if I can find the time.

But yeah, it is part my fault for letting reviews hype me up more, especially since I've been burned so hard just previously this year by the same developer. I try not to get too hyped up for my favorite Nintendo franchises but I can't help myself to still expect greatness.

If you are talking about the motion controls, I kind of see where you are coming from. I personally find the motion controls completely optional. The up and downward throws are extremely situational and I rarely use them because a simple throw does the job better. Same thing with the homing and the spin throw. And many of the capture motion controls can be done with buttons. Even when motion controls are required for a moon there are extremely rare. But I will agree that while the motion controls can be fun to use, have some questionable decisions.

I am shocked. Totally shocked.

Nintendo had a really strong year

Poor Mario. He would've probably had those awards if only he released just a few months later.
