Wasn't there also news on the owners of HTC Vive giving up on the property altogether?, basically meaning that HTC Vive will eventually fade out, leaving just OR (which looks like it'll fade eventually itself) and PSVR.

If you're talking about those rumors about HTC selling the VR division, they were not only proven wrong but HTC announced a new standalone VR headset called Vive Wave.

It doesn't sound like they are confident with the Vive in general, but with how much it costs vs it's marketing and titles going for it, I wouldn't be confident either, but they should pick up the pace and do more with it.

Well, HTC is confident enough on Vive to sell part of its phone business to Google instead of selling the VR part. That should be enough of a proof. But of course, HTC isn't Facebook and they need to make money from it.

Also, the Vive is still the best VR solution (helmet, controllers and tracking system) out there.

Please excuse my bad English.

We'll see just how long they hold onto the VR dept and pushing more with it.

Yes, Vive is the better headset in terms of performance and tracking, but it's no good if the company drops it within a few more years.

VR is definitely the future. I expect all major AAA games to be either VR only or VR supported with next gen consoles.

I feel it's the opposite.

VR has sort of stalled in recent time... Oculus Rift, HTC VIve have gone nowhere.
Playstation VR hasn't exactly set the world on fire in total units sold.

Hardware isn't reaching any kind of decent marketshare to make software development viable... And then you have the software devs.
Eve online developer has abandoned the VR ship, Guerrilla Cambridge got closed by Sony, Occulus shut it's VR film studio...
Crytek and Ubisoft haven't really seen any sales success with it's VR titles.

And then the hardware cost of the peripherals is almost equivalent/sometimes more than a gaming console.

I feel like there is to much hype and no substance in regards to VR.

That's not my experience, it has been exceeding my expectations for basically an early access version of VR.
Prices have gone down, new headsets keep popping up everywhere.

Perception is skewed though. It's not just a peripheral, for me it's the primary display to enjoy games. A lot cheaper than my projector or 4K tv by about 5:1.

I hope Skyrim, Fallout and Doom make decent money in VR. Nothing wrong with experiencing old games like new. I would love to replay Fallout NV and Dishonored in VR. Oblivion, Fallout 3 I'll re-buy as well. Bethesda is sitting on some great stuff for VR. Dead space, Bioshock, heck plenty stuff from last gen that would be awesome to play again in VR with hands.

Hopefully Final Fantasy XV will get VR support when they bring it to PC.

That would be neat. I wonder what will work better. 'Inhabit' one party member for optimum immersion, or 3rd person VR to control the party. I haven't played it, is it still classic 3rd person style?

Square Enix is adding a first person mode on the PC, but it does not look like a fun way to play the game.

I have not played the game yet, as I don't own a console (aside from the Switch), but it looks to be a third person action title.
I would imagine it would be most comfortable to leave the camera in a third person perspective for VR.

We will just have to agree to disagree.

As for it being your primary display, it's not going to be the case for everyone.

I too hope for VR to get a ton of success, I just don't see it right now.
AR however has shown it has a ton of potential, Pokemon Go being a prime example... And then you have the potential of Hololens which might be pushed by Minecraft.

--::{PC Gaming Master Race}::--

VR has a long way to go, it needs to be untethered and less bulky (plus cheaper).

Mobile is getting there just missing the hardware capacity, meanwhile the desktop devices are inversed.

Funny enough I don't see much potential in AR for games at all. How many people actually left the AR feature on on Pokemon Go? Unless going to the gps coordinates is enough to make it AR. AR is extremely limited in what you can do game wise. Ofcourse with an AR headset you can also play VR games with adjustable transparancy, so you can still sort of see what's going on around you.

I did another 4+ hour session of Skyrim VR yesterday, almost 90 hours total now and it still manages to occasionally drop my jaw to the floor. Standing around outside looking at the double moon and auroras in the night sky is simply breath taking. The underground environments are so much better in VR, it simply feels so good to be in the world.
