Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Mario Odyssey is an amazing game...but do not go for 100% [Spoilers]

I almost think it is bad mental health for people who always feel they need to do very tedious/unwelcome and unrequited tasks in video games just because they are present in the game. Disappointment in the big waste of time for all the fruitless slavery seems natural. Replaying the game with a different approach, playing another game, or doing something social or productive would be a much better and more satisfying use of valuable time.

Does 100% on all these unnecessary grindy, repetitive, &/or mundane tasks not make players feel shame and depression?

The jump rope challenge is absurd. And the Volley Ball thing is absurder.

Look at the leaderboard of those mini-games. I think I saw some individuals with more than 3000 in both games. That's insane XD.

And, yeah, when I was talking about two moons which are a pain and boring to get, I was just thinking about those. It's a minor grip in an otherwise fantastically crafted game.

Huh, I actually got both moons in Jump Rope on me first try. Volleyball becomes easier once you find out throwing your cap can hit the ball. The car racing one though, if there's a second moon there, I'm fucked! xD

Same lol.

Didn't even need to try for the jump rope. Went, tried once and got to 100.

I don't know why developers are so afraid these days to put the biggest reward after all the work. It SHOULD be a struggle and challenge and more rewarding to get to that end prize. If someone doesn't want to work to get the big reward, then don't give them the big reward. The simplicity of games these days is really saddening.

What do you want for 100%? A new game starts playing?

I don't know.  They have a long time during development to come up with ideas for that.  Let you play through the game with inverted colors, give you first dibs on DLC content, Open up a new world that allows you to find cheats inside it.  Open up a secondary storyline that runs through the existing levels.  Give you a stylish suit that has invincibility or extendy arms.  I don't know.  Something.

It sucks having to wait till post game content just to have any amount of challenge and sucks being treated to almost nothing after.  The seller might as well just hand us a disc with the movie sequences and a couple of trophies instead of a game, because most of these games rarely feel like a game anymore.  Walking over a few steps to a hill and jumping to get a moon is not a game and should not be in a "game." I'm not dogging Odyssey completely, but just some design decisions that cater more and more to the casual crowd.  Banjo Tooie, Mario 64, Sunshine, and more were much harder than Odyssey just to get through the main story quest.  Odyssey is a lot better though than 3D World and thematically/stylistically is wonderful.  The balance of Odyssey is nice too and it is fun at times. but still.  geez.  Where are my games at?  Sorry /endsoapbox

Really? I've beaten M64, Sunshine and Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie the last year and I think they're pretty similar to Odyssey. Have you played them recently? Because, yep, it really took me more time as a child, but now that I have a solid background in platforming gaming, it's normal that Odyssey comes as a easier experience.

I'll admit I haven't played Tooie or Kazooie since I had a tube tv due to the N64 graphics, but I do remember them being a bit more involved and more difficult.  Yes, it could be some age difference, but I even beat those games several times.  M64 I played some in the DS remake and there really are some difficult stars to get, but I think the camera and the unforgiving jumping mechanic had a lot to do with the difficulty.  Likewise Sunshine had a difficult camera to get used to but once you did, I thought it was a lot of fun and again the shines were much more involved.  I did get every blue coin and shine in that game without a guide.  Since I seem so bothered by it, it might actually be a fun activity for me to go back and revisit these games to do a thorough analysis and write-up on the topic.  Would be nice to revisit that era.

I just got 100% and I loved every second. But, I wasn't going for 100% to complete it and get a reward. Every part is fairly unique, so I actually wanted to see what crazy new thing I was going to find next.

But...is it as shitty as the korok seeds reward?

Yeah, I used to revisit that era from time to time. They were fun times! Tbh, I'd say that Banjo games in general are harder to me than Mario games generally. But talking about the same franchise, I honestly haven't noticed a brutal change between them xD. Most of the difficulty in some Sunshine areas was the camera, which was not pretty good in that game. Same with M64 at times. I wouldn't call that a fair difficulty, and that's why I don't regard them as the best Mario games have to offer (they're both my least favourite games in the franchise). Still great games though.

I'm not all that surprised from the end result of completing the game. It's not uncommon. Mario 64 and Sunshine didn't really give much of a reward either for doing so. I didn't really mind though, since the joy came from the challenge of completing it, rather than the reward at the end.
