Looks like its got more to do with age than anything. Older players tend to not care about framerates or resolution, but the younger players in their mid-to-late teens do.

When I was a teenager I didn't even know what resolution was.

It was YouTube that taught me about resolution.

But you probably knew what bits were, aye?

The only thing I don't like is how people act like frames are just a number. Like ... I can kind of see the argument for resolution and graphics ... 720p looks good on my 1080p tv. But framerate? Nah fam. More than just a number.

It was VGChartz and other gaming sites for me, when I started to get into the internet side of gaming at age 20.

Yeah I knew what bits were. XD And I knew games had pixels and that newer games had more of em, but if you'd asked me what "480p" or "720p" meant when I was a teenager I would've had no idea. I didn't actually know about how many frames per second games used back then either, but I could always feel the difference in smoothness between, say, F Zero X and Mario 64.

Well that was my point. Resolution IS the new bits. Polygons for a short time were marketed too. I'd say the only real difference is that Resolution is mostly a phenomena cared about on the internet. Like Playstation 4 had games at 1080p in the beginning of the gen that were 720p or 900p on Xbox One, but Sony didn't market that. Still, I imagine it swayed some people's opinion. But now we're seeing 4K marketed, just not in an ultra competitive way. More as a upgrade for a base model.

Yeah I remember back in the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube days the "bits" of gen 4 and 5 became "x million polygons per second", before coming "HD/720p/1080p" in the 7th gen. It's always been some technical buzzword designed to make a system seem better than its competition.

You guys sound like a bunch of resolution whores.

Nup, I'm a framerate whore. I've done things for 60fps that I'm not proud of.
