Forums - Movies & TV - I thought Orville was bad, but then...

Have you watched The Expanse? Can't wait until season 3. Much more interesting plot lines than 4 year war with the Klingons. Dark matter has its moments as well. It didn't start great either so I'll give SD a chance. At least SD has a budget to do big things. I hope they don't waste it.

Ahhhh! I forgot about The Expanse. I adore that show... It's "Sci-Fi" but it respects newtonian physics (For humans anyway!) and has a ton of story lines criss-crossing with each other.

Dark Matter doesn't matter anymore. It got cancelled on a cliff-hanger, it also had a very StarGate Universish vibe, even adopted many of the same actors from StarGate Atlantis, didn't really enjoy it that much to be honest.

Killjoys has also gotten convoluted, but the actors wear some awesome looking jackets at-least, I see it being cancelled after the next season.

Killjoys got renewed for two seasons, then it's over.

Some like it and some don't. Tell me OP, did you like the recent movies?

No. First one was semi-decent, but Jar Jar's Trek is pretty much rubbish for me. Not saying they are particularly bad as standalone creations, they are just utterly crappy as Trek.

And STD is Jar Jar's Trek through and through...and given that its lead is someone that annoyed me to no end in Walking Dead for her terrible acting (which only continues in STD), makes it all the worst.

Star Trek had its ups and downs over decades, but for me this is absolutely lowest point ever...and yes, I'm an old fart, but this old fart grew up on original Galactica as well and liked new BSG quite a bit...so no, it's not the case of "olden days were better", it's just this is simply not proper Trek for me.

But, as I said, I'll keep watching Orville, at least it tries to be faithful to Gene's Trek (no matter how bad the casting is) and hope that STD ends up like Star Gate: Universe...canceled...sometimes it's simply better not to have anything new in franchise then to piss randomly on it.

"Fans are clingy, complaining dipshits who will never be glad with any concession you make."

Never does this quote speak more to me than when a new iteration of a beloved classic franchise comes out.

In my immediate circle of friends STD is getting a good rep, so I'll probably check it out as well when I'll be back from my work trips.

...I know how the above sentence sounds....

Ah I didn't know Dark Matter was cancelled. Last season was pretty meh so not surprised. It fell in the trap of making it about an all out war, same trap SD is starting with... I had hope Dark matter would become more like Firefly, oh well no big loss. As long as The Expanse continues.

Basically, Star Trek is a license and legacy rape. It's not in line with anything Gene Roddenberry would have ever wanted his show to be.

CBS also fired all of the remaining writers and producers from Roddenberry's time and shortly thereafter, who were protecting his legacy - this include Brian Fuller (Also recently well known for American Gods and Hannibal).

In addition, CBS has also reneged Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek license which allowed for fan made productions - they didn't scrap it completely, but now there are huge limitations - including preventing old actors from acting in the shows - so that means the people who are quite possibly the most passionate fans with the capital to actually make these can no longer do it.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Yeah, The Expanse is pretty much only classic Sci-Fi show at the moment that is very good...my only major problem with it is actor who's portraying Holden...I even got used to Bobby (female Marine) eventually, but Holden is still, after 3 seasons, cringe worthy...at least for me...I haven't read the books, but I hope Miller returns, he was quite good.

On the side note, Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams is somewhat decent show so far.

Orville had a rough pilot, but episodes 2 and 3 felt like Star Trek: The Next Generation to me with a few jokes. MacFarlane even had a decent dramatic scene and the discussion on human and alien relative moral was interesting to watch unfold. It has flaws, but it comes from a genuine place of love so I appreciate that.

Discovery, despite its massive budget, rang hollow as an "Anti-Star Trek" with the focus on conflict rather than cooperation. I wasn't a fan of set design and make up, but would shrug that off if they got the feel right. For what I saw (first two episodes, and that's it due to CBS All Access paywall) it could easily have been a dozen generic sci-fi series. Nothing besides superficial elements spoke to the core of Star Trek.

My prediction: Discovery will be carried by Netflix deal to get another season, will fail and end up being "black sheep" of Star Trek family. Orville will get another season due to MacFarlane spending capital at Fox, but may have to reduce budget and develop a niche following justifying it being on the air for a few years.

Dream: Star Trek: The Third Generation - A true successor to older series, is released in 2022 restoring the series legacy.

The 4 year Klingon war with the Federation, that is the focus for this series.

I meant internal conflict.  Star Trek has always had challenges from outside sources.  The Borg and the Dominion were both great adversaries as have been Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians.  The key to Starfleet is the idea of the Federation being inclusive and cooperative.  Seeing a mutiny on a show with a crew that is supposed to have been together for years is a poor introduction.

1. It's a CBS production, just licensed to Netflix internationally.

2. Are you implying Netflix originals are bad?...

Absolutely!

Even Stranger Things?

Might be one to watch out for when it comes accross the pond.
I also watched incorporated last season. Was kinda interesting in a way, but has been cancelled after 1 season.
Travellers had a few good episodes, perhaps that can go somewhere. It's the least sci-fi though. Continuum did it better.
Then you have some mainstream shows Timeless and Time after time (cancelled). Timeless was spared the axe by a hair.
But yeah, they all pale in comparison to The Expanse.

Holden makes me moist.
The only criticism I can give the show is that a season is so damn short, just like Game of Thrones. D:

Shohreh is probably a perfect actor fit in my opinion, I don't think anyone else could pull off Avasarala.

I will riot if The Expanse gets cancelled. It needs to be wrapped up respectfully like Battlestar Galactica.

And I am hoping after a few more episides the Orville and Discovery start to come into their own.
