Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Bethesda: Doom will run 720p in both docked and undocked mode on Switch.

The game is around 540p undocked (according to Digital Foundry) and 720p docked.

This just confirmed docked resolution and that it's the same assets rendered at the higher resolution.

Edit: Others seem to have interpreted it the way you have, but I only see the article explicitly say docked is 720p. If anything, both modes will be dynamic resolution.

If this exact same game, with these exact same specs, and the missing features had been announced as a Wii U port of DOOM, basically no one, myself included, would be happy with the port. The standards have changed. My how the standards have changed.

The Switch's unique selling point is so much stronger than the Wii U's even if the concepts are related. There was no justification for the Wii U having crappier versions of many titles. Viewed as a handheld, the Switch is offering something the other consoles just can't approximate in any way and that is actually desirable. Dual screen in the living room was the best for non-gaming applications, but didn't improve your experience beyond slightly more convenient map and split screen benefits.

I sincerely hope that's the case.

As someone who plans to play it docked, I don't want my experience to be handicapped by running at portable spec.

But seemingly no benefit at all for single screen or 2-player splitscreen. Couldn't even be bothered bumping it to 900-1080p.

4-player mode wouldn't be very viable on the handheld's screen anyway.

Four player split screen is not available in portable mode, can only use it in docked mode ...

But players using single screen or 2-player splitscreen on TV are stuck playing at portable spec.

NOW people are viewing it as a hand held? We view it as a hand held when it is convenient now?

Lets be real here, Nintendo;s problems with third party developers has not changed. Bad ports with worse frame rate and missing features has been a standard for Nintendo consoles since Wii. Nothing has changed except people's perception. If I said Wii U had more western AAA third party support than Switch did at this point, people immediately say the ports were not as good. Well, Switch has fewer third party ports and they are also not as good. People are simply changing their tune. DOOM is an auto purchase for me. I am noting that people are allowing the same things they murdered Wii U over to slide with Switch while praising third party support at the same time. Nothing has changed.

Before it was 'seemingly the only Switch dev incapable of figuring out how to use Switch's x2.5 GPU boost when docked' but now it's 'players using single screen or 2-player splitscreen on TV are stuck playing at portable spec' ...

OK, you've made your point that they have difficulties using that extra power but they still somehow manage to find extra uses for it. I guess it is not to your taste then that they didn't consider the common case scenario then ?

It's simply that basically every other Switch dev has pushed a higher resolution in docked mode than portable, and to be basically the only dev on the system to fail to do so would be a sign of a poor developer. As I say though, if Doom does in fact run at a higher res when docked versus portable, I'll happily take back that charge.

The Switch is first and foremost a handheld. Nintendo is the only one that wants to call it a console, and it's being judged as one becuase of it. As a handheld, things have never been better. There was never much of a value proposition for the Switch as a Wii U owner. You either bought because you wanted portability or becuase you wanted to be able to play the latest Nintendo games. The situations aren't the same. The Wii U was a full fat console going for the Wii approach without a killer gimmick.

I know what Switch is... check my posting history. Second, Switch is more capable than Wii U, even as a portable so my comparison is fair and valid. Hell, Switch has improved on the Wii U ports it has recieved.

Your other points have nothing to do with anything. You completely avoided the crux of my post which is to say if I told you Wii U got this exact same port, being a weaker console than Switch is, would it be well recieved? Should people be claiming Nintendo has solved their third party problems despite the game being:

Overpriced.

Lacking content.

Sub par graphically.

Reduced in gameplay by 50%.

Released more than a year later.

Basically what I am saying is that the standards have changed because people actually like Switch. They adjust the narrative as things go along. Now, playing it portably is a big selling point for some people, but a lot of people on this very site argue with me every single day that this console is a home console or even a hybrid (laughable) and those same people are willing to accept games that they would never accept on Wii U and are even going as far as to claim Nintendo is back with third party developers despite the same issues showing up and the number of games being significantly lower.

Will have dynamic resolution while on portable mode, then the extra power will mean the dinamic resolution will be triggered less in the docked mode.
