Forums - Gaming Discussion - Apple should turn the Apple TV into a console

lol... Where is soundwave? I swear he was trying to say Apple TV would take over a few years back. They can't even beat Roku or Amazon with their overpriced hardware.

I don't think Apple even want to get involved in the console market. They're already making a killing as is, so they probably feel like it isn't necessary, and they don't want to get bogged down into the console wars.

Thats a weak observation, Apple is willing to go to war with Netflix, HBO and Amazon for exclusive TV content. They will pour billions into their own shows. What makes you think they won't get themselves into other content? Especially something so big as gaming, the biggest form of entertainment. Why would they moneyhat thatgamecompany's next game? They dont control the living room, and sooner or later they might think about changing that. They might realize the best way to do that is a box that primarily plays games.

If not consoles, they could push for their own games in the App store, getting 100% of a game's revenue is better than a 30% cut. They could release a controller and make it the standard. Anything is possible, but I'm certain Apple will get into games one day.

Pippin 2 incoming!

You know what Turkish? Apple relies heavily on their "cool" factor to sell their iphones, ipads, ipod touches, etc.

You should know that Apple has ZERO cool factor rep among console gamers.  Anyone who would be a game consumer through Apple TV would just be some diehard Apple fan.  I don't think they could convince anyone that has been a PC or console gamer to switch to them.  Who the fuck buys an Apple TV beside die hard Apple fans?  There are cheaper and better options in the streaming device world.  There is no reason to get an Apple TV unless you are heavily invested in their ecosystem such as you bought a lot of shit on their itunes store.

Apple would be in the gaming race if Microsoft didn't take halo from them. No point.

Why would Bungie develop a game solely for the Mac in the 90s?  No one gamed on Macs in the 90s and barely anyone does now.  Everyone went to PCs during the late 80s and 90s.  Back then it would take a game a year or more to port to Mac (if ever) because there was such a low install base.

Apple makes some pretty slick products, no doubt about it, but I don't know how they would enter the gaming market at an affordable price-point. I enjoy and use their products, but damn are they greedy.

Apple isn't interested in gaming, it's not big enough of a market for them. 15-20 million consoles/year is small potatoes for them, they ship that many iPhones in a slow quarter. They could easily compete in this sector though they would get tons of third party support and they can easily out market Sony/Nintendo/MS.

AppleTV ships 6-10 million/year and Apple seems content with that, AppleTV is not a major product for them, though it could be if they really wanted to push it.

It's not needed though IMO, too much competition in gaming is actually a bad thing IMO, platforms need room to breathe in order to grow if you have like 5 different platforms it just creates oversaturation in the market and confusion among consumers. It's not ideal, game platforms are not just regular products they are a format in effect, having too many is not good for the business as what you basically end up with is weakened reach for all of them fighting over a small market. And for developers it's not good to have to make like 5 different versions of each game.

I disagree that this is a good idea. Apple is only interested in very casual games. Just look at the types of games they show at their presentations: infinity blade - the game which gameplay is basically depends on sliding one finger across the screen, super mario run - mario game which is played with one hand, yesterday they’ve shown the game which is played with one button and gyroscope. Do you really think it will make any good to the gaming industry if they succeed. This can change gaming forever.

P.S. I don’t really think they are interested in it right now. If they wanted to they could have entered this market a long time ago. The hardware even in previous Apple TV 4 is decent and I think that it is more powerful than switch. And Apple TV 4K is even more powerful. It can run games at 4K after all.

Yes, it will expand the console market and I do think Playstation needs a healthy competitor, Xbox is withering away as they're not willing to invest in games anymore. It's getting beaten in the UK - its second biggest market - by Nintendo. Apple, could rival Sony WWS. The one thing they will have to realize is that games sell consoles, all year round, and not just biggest AAA ones in "da season". When Apple enters it might also draw in other big players. Amazon hasn't waited and doing their own thing.

Ultimately it will be a good thing, for both them and us.

Apple will never be in competition with Playstation. If they will enter console market they will do their own thing. I don't see them going Xbox/PS way at any point. As I've said they only interested in small casual games.
