Forums - Gaming Discussion - EDGE ranks the top 100 greatest games (2017 edition)

Generally these lists come out and people reflexively shout "wrong, stupid, terrible!" But....wow. This list is a no-joke WTF-fest.

Craptacular list

Lube Me Up

Wow... this list is kinda ballsy. #1 needs to sink before being called GOAT. But... it might be someday.

Advance Wars over every Fire Emblem? wtf? Fire Emblem Fates being the best Fire Emblem? double wtf?
SMG 2 > all other 3D platformers? wtf?
No SMT mainline entry? wtf?

And I definitely believe that Breath of the Wild does not deserve that Number 1 spot.

I WON A BET AGAINST AZUREN! WOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

A list like this that doesn't feature at least one Wizardry or Ultima title is not even worth discussing.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

This list is excrement. How can The Last of Us even be that high with that AI?

What is the criteria? Games that are of high quality according to them? Or games that are of a quality where culture was actually effected?

For example, they may not think a game like Super Mario Bros is very good, but given its time and place, it was much greater than mostly every other game ever released.

Some of these games are fantastic according to some peoples checklists of quality, but they barely made a blip on the radar when it comes to qualities which actually make game have a huge cultural impact; they are lacking these elements.

10. Resident Evil 4
8. Super Mario Galaxy 2
5. Bloodborne
4. The Last of Us
2. Dark Souls

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Usually I like EDGE, but what the hell? That's a rough list.

No Deux Ex. No Halo: Combat Evolved. No Final Fantasy VI. No Super Mario Bros. 3. No Chrono Trigger. No SoulCalibur. Portal, but no Portal 2.

Inclusions like Battlefied 4, Tearaway, Transistor, and Destiny.

I agree with #1 so I guess that's something.

I actually applaud the following criterion: "Each game had to stand up today rather than making the cut for reasons of nostalgia or historic significance." But a lot of older games are worthy of inclusion because of great game design, not because of influence or nostalgia.

Take a look at EDGE's 2007 list. What a difference a decade makes.

Looks like the 2007 author was a bit of a Dreamcast fanboy

I'm OK with Dark Souls being #2 but ranking Destiny higher than Halo 3 is a shameful display.

Yeah, I have to share the same sentiment displayed all across this thread. Extremely weak list, and I don't agree with it.

Notable "huh, what?" choices from the list:

· Only Final Fantasy present is Final Fantasy XII, which is a good game nonetheless but nowhere as great as some of the other mainline entries.

· Puzzle & Dragons is better than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Okay, maybe; I haven't really played Puzzle & Dragons. But then more below there's Battlefield 4, outshining both. That's called having a cake and inhaling it too.

· The Witness is present, but no Braid; also The Witness is ranked hella high all things considered. I don't mind it showing up in a Top 100 list, but it doesn't deserve anything so high.

· Only Metal Gear shown is MGSV. Yeah, whatever you say EDGE.

· Tetris as random 7th best game ever is questionable as fuck. Tetris has its eternal legacy imprinted in videogame history and no one is taking that from it, but I'd like to hear the logic process that makes Tetris better than, let's say, Demon's Souls, but not Bloodborne or Dark Souls. Or better than A Link to the Past, but worse than Breath of the Wild.
