Perhaps most pertinently, 441 Google employees responded. Of them, more than half  – 56% to be precise– said they didn't think it was right for the company to fire Damore.

The former engineer actually had significant support among all the corporations represented in the survey. But it did vary from company to company. 

At Uber, 64% of employees who participated in the survey thought Google shouldn't have fired Damore. Employees at Apple and LinkedIn were nearly evenly split in the poll but leaned slightly toward approving Google's decision. Meanwhile, 65% of respondents from Lyft were good with the way it went down.

Lyft is the Neogaf of tech companies.

I'm not going to debate on what was in Demore's memo, that's not really that important. But Google firing someone over an internal memo that wasn't really that harsh looks more like a symbolic gesture on Google's part to show how great there diversity policies are.

Naturally, this reaction of Google gave me a sneaking suspicion all is not well in paradise.

I think google tried to stamp out that dumpster fire too quickly, hoping it would go away. I agree, it wasn't means for termination. From the snippets I've read and heard, he wasn't saying anything overly offensive, if only somewhat controversial or debatable. Everybody LOOOOVES free speech until it clashes with your own believes, then it's a freaking witch hunt.

An employer does not need to state reasons for firing an employee. Business is just business and it is just capitalism. Google is a business and it is a capitalist system. The employees making noise, should remain silent or else they can be fired for being disruptive.

And in a system with free speech, people are also free to voice their dissent. Likewise, potential employees can choose who they work for (although I can't imagine this affecting the choices of very many people).

An employee wrote a memo that openly criticized his employer and got fired.

If the nature of the memo wasn't so controversial, this would be a non-story.

The bottom line is that he was dumb enough to openly cite the institution.

Unbelievable that people are actually defending Google in this situation.
