Forums - Gaming Discussion - Could Apple or Nintendo make VR mainstream?

Only way is giving it for free with a desirable product, and offer software that is desirable. Maybe is more important than specs, for mainstreamness.

New revision of switch could come vr ready and with a plastic that holds the screen. Release same day as Mario kart vr. Sell it as cheap as possible. Make vr part of switch options(TV, tabletop, handheld and now, vr). Sell it as cheap as possible.
People would buy it even if not interested to vr. Some of them could became interested. If the software is enjoyable, consumers would designate the awesomeness to vr.

Apple has yet to make an equivalent to the Gear VR, and I believe this is holding back VR in it's potentially most mainstream sector; Mobile. Smart phones have a huge install base and are powerful enough for entry level VR experiences.

Nintendo popularized motion control by integrating it fully into their Wii console. Integrated solutions for new technologies are more effective than peripheral attatchments because you get access to the entire market rather than a fraction of it. Imagine Nintendo creating a VR console in 5 years time with 4K resolution, no wires, 150 degrees field of view, lighter and smaller form factor with support for Mario Kart, Zelda, F-Zero and the VR equivalent of Wii Sports.

VR is something that requires yuuge power for immersiveness and that's something Nintendo can't and won't do since Gamecube. They can't force their cute art through low  resolution, bad fov, cheap optics and tech in VR. The Nintendo way doesn't work in VR. Even PS5 won't likely be ready for 4K VR in 5 years, for Nintendo that would be post 2030 (that's no joke considering how prevalent 720p is on the NS, a res which the og Xbox had in 2001).

Apple will jump on the bandwagon after everybody else has opened the path for them to take everything.

It's not something you should worry about now tho, VR on current tech is never gonna be mainstream. Come back when we have wireless headsets with dual 4K 120hz OLED displays at sub $300.

You think Super Mario Galaxy and Windwaker (GC version) can't run on Switch in VR?
People have already managed to run those games on OR via Dolphin, and Switch has already been hacked for VR

A lighter revision of the Switch with a 1080p screen, always running in tv mode could unlock the Wii library for VR. Cute art works really well in the current VR headsets. Bright colors hide the screendoor effect. 3rd person VR works really well for platformers. It would be a good selling point for Nintendo's mid gen upgrade. Plsu bringing those games to the Switch would sell regardless of any VR mode. Star wars rogue squadron 2 in VR, yes please.

It'll be Sony that makes VR mainstream, like they made consoles mainstream, and blu - ray.

VR is a niche market until they can put it in something just a bit bigger than a pair of glasses. In fact even then it is a niche market because its main use case is games, and it is really only appealing for first person games. I mean I guess if it is only a little bigger than a pair of glasses it wouldn't be annoying to play other types of games because you wouldn't be strapping on a big headset. But overall even as a gaming device VR just seems pretty damn niche.

Like the Dlodo V One?

Have you tried VR btw? It's not just first person games that are appealing. Far from it. Many other genres are a lot more comfortable to start out with. VR video is still in its infancy yet it's interesting to see it grow. The Joshua Bell vr experience is where it needs to go.

Yea it'll be interesting to see it grow like watching paint dry or grass grow. Maybe it will be in its second trimester when I'm dead.

Lmfao, which part Ninty stan?

Edit: Ah, the mainstream console part, that is an actual fact. How many Nintendo consoles have sold over 100 Million? The Wii, which pails in comparison to PS1/ PS2 sales, and will be left behind when compared to PS4 lifetime sales. PS3 was the lowest selling PS platform and has outsold 95% of Ninty consoles! Nintendo might have existed before Sony, and influenced them to get into the console market, but that doesn't mean they expanded the market like Sony did. Even now Sony dominates, expanding into new markets, every gen. You might have a point with handhelds, but again, Apple/ Samsung took away that market from Nintendo lmao. Can't say the same about Sony's console market grip.

If sony can't nor samsung, why would Apple or Nintendo? Two companies that are smaller then so y and Samsung in terms off hardware sold.

We do not have the techbology yet that is necessary to make vr mainstream we are now at the magnavox odyssey stage of VR. The pre atari era. Vr can become indistinguishable from reality. So there is a very long way to go still. I think we will see a solid 20 million userbase in a decade.

Nintendo made motion gaming mainstream? Do you see anyone still using motion gaming? But no, Apple cannot make VR mainstream. It is too isolating of an experience.

I don't get where this idea that VR is isolating comes from. 10's of millions of people sit alone in a room playing mulyiplayer games with a headset on, with no connection to the people they are playing with. In VR the connection to the people you are experiencing it with in multiplayer is greatly increased. As the tech gets better, it will literally be as if you present in the same space talking, and interacting with other people online.
