Smash is not a huge series for me, Mario Party less so, and Pokemon Let's Go looks watered down and overly simplified. Outside of that, there's nothing for 'this' year that excites me much about Nintendo's (1st party) release schedule. Okay yeah Fire Emblem looks good (although the graphics are a bit on the rough side, though not Wii-level like some people exaggerate), but that's coming in the Spring. There are so many projects from teams that haven't released anything yet on Switch that it just seems odd for them to not even have a partway made concept to share with people.

Yes of course, this is how it works for all the critics. "I don't care about Smash or Mario Party so IT SUCKED!!".

I'm not saying you should force yourself into enjoying these games or have a good time with an E3 presentation that has nothing you're interested in, I'm just saying a little less selfishness can go a long way. Don't say "there wasn't much to miss" when Nintendo has just announced a wet dream level entry in one of their most beloved and popular franchises ever. Say "I didn't like it".

Everything someone says is generally opinion, me saying there wasn't much to miss is my interpretation of the event. I didn't say it sucked either, not being impressed and/or being slightly disappointed isn't the same as saying something sucks.

Also, my criticism is mainly grounded in the latter part of what I said: "There are so many projects from teams that haven't released anything yet on Switch that it just seems odd for them to not even have a partway made concept to share with people."

Either Nintendo has more and they didn't show it intentionally because they thought all Nintendo/Switch fans would just want to see Smash this time, or they don't have more to show and are just padding for time. Neither builds very much confidence outside of the group that loves and is satisfied with Smash enough to have it carry a presentation for them. They very well could have more under wraps, but until they show it then this specific event just seems a bit bare-bones to me.

I am so excited for this new smash. and them bringing snake back as he was my main in brawl. I haven't played much of ssb4 owned for both 3ds and wiiu but my disc cracked couple days after I got it and I cant play it too well on 3ds because I have big hands

I voted 2 in the E3 rating thread, but that was immediately after the event. Now that I've better come to terms with the delays and lack of announcements, I'll give it a 4/10 in the poll here. Still a poor show, but definitely not as bad as 2015 n 2016.

Also one week until Aces, but they've not yet acknowledged the problem with the netcode. Annoying because I would get the game day 1 otherwise. Now I'll just wait and see if they stealth fixed the issue.

See it this way:

Nintendo's 2016 E3 was 99% Zelda.
Nintendo's 2017 E3 was at least 50% Mario.

It only makes sense they'd focus similarly on Smash now. These three games are Nintendo's biggest first-party IPs except for Mario Kart, and they are Nintendo's three most ambitious projects in recent memory, if not ever (besides also likely being the Switch's best-selling games alongside MK and Pokémon). The only difference is that you probably cared a lot about Zelda and Mario so you weren't bothered to see Nintendo spend so much time on them, but because you don't really care about Smash now you were annoyed by it.

Just butting in for a second, but even if what you said was the case, he would still be right. He didnt say that what he thought was a general concenssus, but rather his view of the conference. So if the games shown this year didnt excite him as much, then the conference didnt excite him as much.Personally, and thats my own view, I like Smash announcements because of how the announcements are presented and because of the chracters, but while I like the game itself and not its biggest fan.I mean, that may change if they announce a subspace emmisary-like campaign. And mario wasnt 50% of the conference last year but I digress.

And just as a sidenote:Nintendo cant have every year to be like 2017 simply because thats impossible. They dont have enough people to have an AAA game, or at least fairly ambitious game every month or so for years on end.2018 being a more "quiter" year compared to 2017 will probably mean that the stream of high quality games will be increased next year though.

Mario was probably more than 50% of Nintendo's E3. Note I'm saying 'E3' and not 'conference' or 'presentation', because I'm talking about everything, not just the 25 minute direct. Even then, I really never understood all the hype around 2017's E3... I mean of course, it was a very, very good showing, but people talk about it as the end all be all of E3's. What even were the new announcements? People talk about this year not having many of them, how many did we get last year? The only ones I remember were Pokémon and Metroid Prime 4, the former of which was as surprising as sunrise at 6 AM, and both of which were essentially empty promises for a distant future. Eh, I guess there was Kirby Star Allies as well, and another uninspired Yoshi game to get delayed for a couple years. How was it so great? I mean, let's compare, in order:

Rocket League, a surprising third-party announcement > Dragon Ball FighterZ.
ARMS, about to be released and nothing left to talk about > Mario Tennis: Aces.
Splatoon 2, kinda the same situation as ARMS but a little later down the line > Pokémon Let's Go Eevee & Let's Go Pikachu.
Xenoblade 2, cool-looking but everyone knew it'd be there > Nothing like it, but we got great-looking Xenoblade 2 DLC.
Kirby, surprising and looking good but hardly a huge announcement > Super Mario Party.
Pokkén Tournament DX, a Wii U port > well maybe not at E3 but we got loads of them this year.
Pokémon 8th generation, an empty promise > no empty promises this year.
Metroid Prime 4, a hype empty promise > again, no empty promises this year.
Yoshi, kinda surprising but looks somewhat uninspired > Daemon X Machina.
Fire Emblem Warriors, an alright spin-off > Fire Emblem: Three Houses, a very interesting mainline game.
Breath of the Wild: Ballad of the Champions > Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion.
Mario & Rabbids, a weird-ass spin-off everyone knew about already > I guess this would have been Star Fox Grand Prix, so, nothing.
Super Mario Odyssey, the biggest game Nintendo has and were to focus on > Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

I really can't see much of a difference there. DBZ is a more hype announcement than Rocket League, Mario Tennis is a better game than ARMS. Splatoon 2 and Xenoblade 2 take it over Pokémon Let's Go and Xenoblade DLC. Kirby and Mario Party are about the same level. Pokkén Tournament, who cares. Pokémon and MP4, cool but they were empty promises, sure they were hype, but we only got them because there were concerns over both, we didn't need to hear more about them this year since they're still way down the line and are still confirmed. Yoshi and Daemon X Machina, who cares. Octo Expansion is better than Ballad of the Champions. Mario & Rabbids sure takes it over nothing. Mario Odyssey and Smash Ultimate are about the same level of hype/sales/popularity/quality.

Both presentations got to their big thing about 20 minutes in, literally the only difference is that they spent 5 minutes on Mario Odyssey and 25 minutes on Smash Ultimate. I guess people were disappointed because they knew the presentation would end with Mario last year, but this year they kept hoping for something more after Smash. That makes maybe the video itself worse, which I agree with, the Smash specifics sure didn't need to be listed like they were, but in terms of actual content shown this E3 is barely a step down over last year's. People just overrate the crap out of last year because of the Switch hype and Metroid Prime 4.

The answer is in your own response. You are looking people dissapointment through your own eyes, rather than trying to see from their.Im not really on the mood to write a huge post, so Ill try to keep it direct and simple.

For me, this E3 wasnt bad, at all.I would personally give it a 7.5.But it loses compared to last year mostly because the kind of games I like were mostly a no show this year.Like I said, I like Smash, but Im certainly not as a big of a fan as you.XC 2 DLC looks simply awesome, but its not a new game as XC 2 (base game) was.Daemon X Machina looks promissing, but what it made look promissing was the treehouse segment, and not the trailer.FE Three Houses was the highlight for me honestly, but I would lie if I didnt say I was a bit dissapointed they didnt show gameplay at the treehouse. And that was basically it.There were smaller announcements like Overcooked 2 and DB Fighters Z, but they were leaked to hell and bayond, and at the conference nothing new was shown about them(DBZ is a port and Overcooked is a by-the-books sequel).

Compare that to last year, which we had a closer look at XC 2 story(brand new, the main mechanism of Mario Odyssey and what would make it set apart from other Mario games, DLC for Zelda (even if I felt that the end product was a bit underwhelming), the announcement of Prime 4, which everyone thought was dead, or at least it was a pipe dream. And the announcement of another Metroid game, which turned out to be a solid game, that had a release date for 2 or 3 months after E3.The Pokemon announcement was indeed silly, but served as a reassurance of sorts that Ninmtendo would indeed go all in with the console.Mario + Rabbids, that everyone knew that would happen but everyone thought it would suck because rabbids, but turned out to be an excellent game. And many more games.Overall E3 2017 was more diversified in terms of genres represented, and there were more surprises. With representation, its easier to appeal to a higher number of people, and who dosent like surprises? You loved this E3 probably because of Smash and thats totally fine.I just think that last year had more games that people wanted to see.

In the end, I wrote a big post. But oh well.

No one talking about Octo Expansion or Octopath Traveler? What's going on here?

The post I made is just a really objective comparison. Everyone's in their right to be disappointed if they weren't as interested in the stuff shown this year, and I'm in my right to be hyped if Smash Ultimate looks like the best thing ever to me, but regardless of opinions like these, there isn't a huge difference between both showings objectively. I agree last year's was slightly better, but only slightly. Neither matches 2014 in my opinion.

I dont think in the slightest that there is objectivity in that view, but I dont think we will reach a concenssus on this.Lets agree to disagree.

Octopath Traveler is out already? :o   (not that I personally care, but it is a big deal)

Octo Expansion, I got it, but I'm playing through it at a sluggish pace. It's really awesome, but I just can't get Smash out of my head at the moment.

Octopath Travel is not out, yet. But the new "demo" is where you can play for 3 hours and test each character within the timelimit. The progress will be moved to the full game. So you can play the game for 3 hours and continue when it is released. I really lime it so far. Took the thief. He is voiced by the same guy who also does Uchiha Sasuke in japanese. Really fits the character.

According to Gamexplain the netcode in Aces has apparently been fixed for the full version of the game. Not that I don't trust them, but still gonna wait until I see it for myself.

I already know I'm getting Octopath, no need to spoil anymore of the game. Octo Expansion is fun, but the levels are pretty hit or miss, and I'm not seeing the deep lore they advertised. Haven't 100% yet though, I heard there's a different final boss or something for doing so.

Yes, there is a secret boss and she is a huge pain in the ass.
