A late 2018 release would mean a 5 year production cycle. Retro have never even gone 4 years without releasing a game before now, and they don't even have the "first HD game" excuse this time. This long a haitus is not indicative of a healthy and productive studio.

Again, we dont know how big their game is, especially if it's big new strong IP. This year is already very strong for Switch lineup, Nintendo could easily saving Retros game for next year even if its done buy now, Nintendo even basically said that Mario Odyssey could be dont for Switch launch but they decided to be holiday season because Zelda BotW alone is very strong game. Also, Retros could easily work on more games than one from end of 2013. until now.

But as others have said, 3.5 years of silence is not a good sign, not indicative of a production that is going well.

But those 3.5 years including Wii U, most likely they were working on Wii U game and they just moved project to Switch later when they started abandoning Wii U, so there wasnt any need to say anything about it. And now Switch is only 3-4 months on market and if they don't release it in 2017. they didn't need to talk about it now yet.

Even if you factor in time to port it across to Switch, it should have been done by now. Even their first HD game only took them 3 years to make. The longest they have ever gone between releasing a game and announcing the next one is less than 3 years.

Usually, their devloppement cycle is less than 3 years

Metroid Prime 3-Aug 2007

DKC Returns-Nov 2010

DKC Tropical Freeze-Feb 2014

Thats over 3 years between each game.

Yeahy.... in the meantime, they helped with Mario Kart 7 for the 3ds, also.

Zelda:Breath took 6 years to release. I suspect Retro is working on a similar type game, and if it's a new IP I wouldn't doubt there were a few discarded prototypes in the first year. We'll probably hear about it in the next year, to be released next fall or thereabouts.

Yes, and maybe is done buy now, but Nintendo chose not to showed it yet because it's probably holiday 2018. game and they want to show it later. Also development of 2D game is not same like for instance development of big new 3D IP.

That's a big leap to assume their next game is "big new 3D IP".

Imho they were working on a Game highly focused on the Wii U gamepad and due to the Switch replacing it they had to rethink most of the game if not scrap it all together, I'm leaning more towards the first option because if they scrapped a game Liam Robertson would have already reported something about it...

Hopefully a new IP or something that will be released next year
