I love what I've seen from Odyssey, but BotW not only changed the Zelda formula, reinvigorated non-Nintendo/non-Zelda/old Zelda fans, it redefined the open world genre.

In my eyes, no contest BotW wins GotY.

Mario Galaxy actually won quite a few game of the year awards. Not unanimous but several large publications like Gamespot gave it the nod.

I'm talking about the definitive type of GOTY. You know the ones on the frontpage of gotypicks.com.

Nintendo's odds are definitely very good this year. With games like RDR2 and GoW4 now coming out there's not a whole lot of competition considering how great BotW did, with only a couple games (Nier, Horizon) that seem like legit contenders. Odyssey definitely has the appearance of a game that will be in the mid to upper 90's as well.

It's been quite a while since I thought Nintendo had a GotY on their hands, and this year they might have two.

It'll probably be BotW though. The physics engine, cool tools, and climbing/floating etc system strikes me as features that will gradually become standard in open world games. It really was a revolutionary experience.
