Sony is fine with PS4 and PS4

Microsoft is open to corssplay between PC, Mobile, Xbox, Switch, and PS4 but Sony said no.

Sony are fine with PC crossplay, guess they don't see them as there direct competitors.

MS seem to have changed there stance since FF14 and will allow crossplay with anyone because it benefits there platforms.

Hopefully MS have changed their position on FF14 too, but Sony themselves have always been fine with cross-play there. I wonder if it was a deal with SE specifically or something?

as someone else said, RL has PS4 and PC crossplay

it's with other consoles they seem uninterested in

Long run this could be bad for Sony if it becomes the norm with switch, xb1 and pc games.

Don't worry, if they happen to find themselves not in first place in the next gen i'm guessing they'll go back to trying to say "but we're #4theplayers!1!". Because it seems like they only wanna be "#4ThePlayers" until they start to develop a comfortable lead and no longer need try too hard acting like that anymore.

In a general sense I guess. But on a game to game basis, I wonder if they'd really be concerned with losing PS4 sales to a game like Rocket League?

I'd like for them to allow this for some games at least.

Consistency is the key. At the very least there must be precise rules according to which which cross-platform multiplayer is allowed.

Because Sony have nothing to gain, if Microsoft was leading they would be the ones stopping cross-platform.

As the market leaders Sony have a sales advantage whereby people will buy a PlayStation just so they can play with their friends who also have a PlayStation (the majority). If there is cross-platform play Sony lose that advantage, and someone with friends who all own ps4 can still buy a different console.

It's not good for consumers, but no one should fool themselves into thinking Microsoft wouldn't be doing the exact same thing in their position. Last-Gen microsoft didn't even allow cross-platform with 360 > PC afaik, while PS3 had Portal 2 / FFXIV etc.
