How Sony could counter the Switch!

Forums - Gaming Discussion - How Sony could counter the Switch!

With the early success of Switch,  it seems like Nintendo has a good concept. However, it is an underpowered system for this generation, let alone a 9th generation system. Lastly, will it continue to do as well when people are done playing Zelda? The exclusive release calendar is fairly barren this year as far as AA and AAA is concerned. Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, Ultra Street Fighter 2, Fire Emblem Warriors and Splatoon 2. This is where my idea comes in for Sony.

Sony is the exclusive King. This year brings Horizon Zero Dawn, Gravity Rush 2,  Ni No Kuni 2, Gran Turismo, Uncharted: The lost Legacy, Final Fantasy 12 remaster, Yazuka 0, Nioh, Nier Automata, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyria Revolution, Wipeout Omega Collection, Knack 2, MLB: The Show, etc. Possibly God of War 4 too. In 2018 they will likely release The Last of Us 2, FF7 remake, Kingdom Hearts 3, Days Gone, Yakuza 6, Detroit, Dreams, and God of War 4 if not in 2017.

OK, here is my exciting idea! The PS4P! PlayStation Four Portable. A system that can play PS4 games at home and on the go. No drop in resolution for portable mode and a big battery. Maybe $350 with a pack in game or $300 for a stand alone. No gimmick controlers to raise the price. Just another Dual Shock required for local 2 player. 6.2 inch OLED screen with HDR.

Imagine being able to play modern 8th generation games on the go, not 7th or 7.5. Also, there are many older games available for porting: Infamous 2nd Son, Killzone Shadow Fall, Knack, The last Guardian, FF 15, Black Ops III, Destiny, etc. Plus it could handle newer PS4 releases. Just not PS4 Pro versions. What do you guys think?

I think you're asking for a good deal more than $300 unless they're willing to accept quite a loss per unit. It would certainly require one heck of a battery and some impressive heat dispersal.

Strikes me as something Sony wouldn't bother risking after the Vita and with their resources currently split between two big successes (PS4 and PSVR).

Nah. Sony doesn't need to counter the Switch because, according to Nintendo, they're not competing with Sony. Sony is dominating so there's no need to release competing hardware.

Just say "Nintendo is doing their thing over there. Good for them." and focus on what they're good at.

They don't really need to counter the Switch at all. Their PS4 and PS4 Pro are fine as is.

Sony don't need to counter the Switch.

Besides, any attempts to counter it are more likely to blow up in their face than actually succeed...

Bet Shiken that COD would outsell Battlefield in 2018. http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=8749702

I just wonder how they'll get their CDs to fit in the device, unless they make it a bit bigger.

Nintendo will do it's own thing, Sony will have little influence over that, but if they try to go head to head I dont see it ending well for Sony

80% from this list is third party and could easily be a release for Switch. Just saying.

Hell No... Nintendo just doing their own thing. And trust me... you dont want play PS4 AAA games on "handheld/portable" mode.

If the tech was there, Sony would do it. So would MS, for that matter. But, the tech isn't even close. You cannot get that kind of power into a portable form factor at a reasonable price. Maybe in 5-7 years. But, I can't imagine they'd invest in new PS4/XB1 hardware at that point.
