If the Scorpio is too powerful for $399, what does that mean for PS5?

Forums - Gaming Discussion - If the Scorpio is too powerful for $399, what does that mean for PS5?

It seems all this talk about about Scorpio has people wondering about PS5. I mean I never heard so much talk about PS5 until Scorpio specs were made official.

I think Sony is going to try to hit the sweet spot of $399 again, it clearly works for them. If so though, can it be signfiicantly more powerful than Scorpio?

The general concensus is Scorpio can't be $399, it just too much power in a box to acheive that price. The best you can apparently do at that price is PS4 Pro.

So if the PS5 is about 3 years away... what could it possibly offer at that price? Can it be a device that makes the Scorpio look like a dated piece of crap?!?! Any chance it will have games too demanding for the Scorpio to handle? I'm doubting it.

I definitely think, without a doubt, that Sony will be very cautious about offering a console at too high of a launch price again, after PS3.

But if Scorpio is very successful at $500 or more, would they offer different PS5 models with different specs right out of the gate?

I don't think so either. Because I think most people will look at it with a "glass is half empty" attitude.
They won't see a stronger system if you pay more. They'll see it as them getting shafted and getting a weak system when they pay the standard price.

We're talking about 1 year's difference in tech vs. 2-3 years before we're likely to see PS5 and perhaps XB2. I'd say that's plenty of time for Scorpio beating hardware at the $400 price point, especially when tech we've been anticipating for some time (7nm, Zen, Navi, etc) should be ready for consoles by then.

Depends on the hardware they choose to go with. In 3 years from now a 10 TF console could like still come in at $399.

I think Scorpio will dominate globally. Sony will have to release ps5 that is as powerful as the scorpio early next year

The big jump is going to come from the CPU, Jaguar was crap when the PS4 launched, Pro/Scorpio are still using that under powered CPU.

I think PS5 will likely be 10-12TF, have 16gb/24gb of ram, modern CPU architecture. I could see this device launching for $399 holiday 2019, maybe selling for a slight loss.

That new CPU is going to do wonders.

Predictions (Made July 2019)

LTD: PS4 - 130m, Switch - 110m, XBO - 52m       2019 : PS4 - 15m, Switch - 18.8m, XBO - 4.8m        2020: Switch - 22m (Peak Year)

Don't worry, Scorpio will be as outdated as the PS4 Pro was when it released.

Spoiler:PS5 will be outdated upon its release too :)

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

I dont see PS5 before 2019. earliest so talk about PS5 is premature.

I think in 2020 doubling the performance of Scorpio for $399 should be more than possible.

Technology stands still for no one.

Zen/Ryzen, Vega, GDDR5 will all be old news by then.

MS couldn't dominate globably even after the disastrous PS3 launch reception and troublesome CELL architeture, there is no way the Scorpio/XBO can beat the PS4 globablly, much less take the already imposed differece in sales between the two of them.
