Forums - Sony Discussion - Did Sony make a mistake by be first to release an upgraded console.

No, they'll win the gen regardless.

It would have made the Pro much better if they'd waited, though.

No and Yes. Yes because it's a PS4 for those Sony fans with 4K TVS so Sony has a console for 4K owners. Also I think they really didn't need one. Unlike MS they will release a PS5 as their next gen system. MS will probably stick with the Scorpio and have the Scorpio 2 share games with Scorpio similar to the XB1 and Scorpio situation until Scorpio 3 so it makes sense for MS but not really for Sony since they will release a PS5 and stop supporting the Pro in the next few years

Meh. Scorpio isnt aiming to stop PS4 Pro. Its a premium product. Ferrari's arent there to compete with Golfs etc.
It will attract high end gamers but dont expect massive shipments from Microsoft.
As for the Pro releasing early.. i dont think thats the issue with the Pro. My biggest gripe with the Pro is that i dont know what it's trying to be. Is it a 4k console? Is it a 1080p console? Does it do everything superior to the PS4 like framerate and resolution?
I personally believe the system is alittle under baked with no direction. With no competition the Pro should have been a $800 4k machine with player and all. Instead they just basically made a improved PS4 that competes very closely with XB1S and PS4S.

Nope.

Think about it. Since the Pro is old enough, they can make a $299 Pro slim or whatever and say, "hey, our console is only slightly weaker and $100+ cheaper".

People who see a $499 and $300-350 console will probably go for the cheaper

Using that thinking you could simply go for the PS4 , by waiting they could have cut any impetus that the scorpio gains right from under it , and the scorpio is really about stopping sony from gaining more ground in the US , anything more is a bonus.

To begin with, rememebr that the PS4 has basically outsold the XB1 by around 2:1 globally. By novmber this year that could very well look like 65M to 33M in favor of the PS4. At this point, there is absolutely nothing sony has to worry about when it comes to MS as far as this generation is concerned.

Then now consider teh price. Make no mistake, Cheaper will always sell more than whatever it is that is more expensive. There is a consumer that fits into all the price brackets. And the lower the price ladder you go the more consumers you will see there. So basically, the best selling consoles will always be the $200 PS4/XB1s (assuming they could be as low as that this fall). Then follwed by a $299/$350 PS4pro and then the $399/$499 scorpio.

So sony is going to sell more $200 consoles. Then in the premium segment, MS will be up against a console that could cost anywhere between $50 to $150 less than its own offering.

Fnally and thisis the real kicker...... by january 2018 when sony announces they have sold through 70M consoles worldwide and yet again MS remains quiet on its global sales; no one would care how well or how powerful the scorpio is.

So no, sony shouldn't have waited. They didn't need to come first or a year sooner.... but doing so wouldn't affect them in anyway. I mean for all the omemtum MS supposedly had after the launch of teh XB1s, look at whats happened this year so far.

The console market has changed, we will be seeing new hardware from one or multiple competitors on a yearly bases. Sony and Microsoft both made the decision to go to a more consumer electronics like release cycle with PS4 and XBO when they choose standard hardware and APUs. As a result, they will be one upping each other every other year, and at times their will be head to head battles.

At this point the hardware is just a means to an end though. What really matters is the OS, Software, and Services. Sony and Microsoft will offer new hardware every year, and they will flip flop being on top, but whoever has the best service has the best chance of keeping consumers around when they are not on top hardwarewise.

That is the reason both companies are pushing hard to offer much more than just games. These consoles are their Android and iOS. They want people using PS4 and XBO for everything they do at home, because it makes them massive amounts of money. Just having your PS4 or XBO on and connected to the interenet is money i their pocket, whether you spend or not.

So to wrap it up, I think Sony did just fine with PS4 Pro. They will focus on delivering great software, services, apps, and OS features over the next 18 - 24 months, and we will see a PS4 Premium or a PS5 that out classes the Scorpio in 1 - 2 years. The only thing I would consider a mistake is if Sony never delivers a PS4 Portable in some form or fashion.

Honestly as long as Sony keeps the games rolling, they wont lose any sleep over what MS does. A more powerful console is all well and good. But at the end of the day if you don't have the Software needed to truly make your console shine and separate itself from the competition you're SOL.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

That will never happen.

Now if you said we would see nw hardware at every node shrink? then I would totally agree with you.

What has made these current itterations possible is the node shrink from 28nm to 14/16nm. There is nothing happenning in the industry thats significant enough to warrant any new itterations till 7nm nodes come along.

And if the industry keeps its currnt pace, we will see node shrinks every 3-4years.

7nm nodes are due to become mainstream/available around 2019. So expect new hardware in 2020.

My point is more to do with your last comment about them not needing to come out first, to me the could have let it ride they where doing great everywhere and for what , at least MS knowing it can't win the gen can use the Scorpio to win back momentum or what's more likely at least slow down Sony's rate of gain in the only place where they are some what competitive, and it leaves them with a much firmer footing going forward to the next gen.

Still it's like you said it won't stop Sony dominating this gen , but it might turn out to have gotten MS off life support.
